Gary Jones named Mud Hens manager

TOLEDO, OH – Today, in conjunction with the Detroit Tigers, Gary Jones was named the 68th manager in the history of the Toledo Mud Hens.

Jones, of Henderson, Texas, has managed 18 seasons in professional baseball (1,242-1,168), 10 of which have been at the Triple-A level. He is 652-605 as a Triple-A manager, including winning back-to-back Pacific Coast League Championships at the helm of the Edmonton Trappers in 1996 and 1997. He was named Baseball America’s Minor League Manager of the Year in 1997.

Jones’ most recent managerial position was from 2018-2021 with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, going 202-196 in his three seasons in Allentown, PA. He also has made stops in Pawtucket (AAA, 1999-2001), Edmonton (AAA, 1995-97), Mobile (AA, 2004-06), Huntsville (AA, 1994), Fort Wayne (A, 2003), Madison (A, 1991, 93) and Reno (A, 1992) after beginning his managerial career in 1990 with the Arizona League Athletics. In addition to his Triple-A championships, he has a pair of Double-A championships with Mobile (2004; Co-Champs) and Huntsville (1994).

Jones has served the last several seasons in a number of coaching roles under Detroit Tigers manager AJ Hinch, including major league coach in 2024 and 2025, third base coach in 2023, and the first base coach in 2022. In addition to Detroit, he had major league coaching roles with the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and Boston Red Sox.

Jones assumes managerial duties with the Mud Hens tonight against the Omaha Storm Chasers at Werner Park. Interim manager, Mike Hessman, will return to his duties as hitting coach.
