Red wings climb back down two in the ninth to win

TOLEDO, OH- The Toledo Mud Hens lost in a late-inning heartbreaker 7-6 against Rochester Red Wings.

Austin Bergner started game three of the series on the mound for the Mud Hens. Bergner entered the game with a 6.35 ERA and a 1-1 record on the season. Bergner retired the first three batters of the game for the Red Wings in order.

Joan Adon started the game for Rochester on the mound and entered the game with a 5.54 ERA and a 1-3 record.

The Mud Hens were held scoreless in the last game but were quick to get on the board in the first inning. After a one-out walk drawn by Parker Meadows, Tyler Nevin hit a sharp ground into the left-center field gap to score Meadows from first for the game's first run. Grant Witherspoon then worked a walk to put runners on first and second. Two batters later Donny Sands hit a two-out double down the left field line to score the Mud Hens second run of the inning. The next batter Corey Joyce hit a two-RBI double to score two more Mud Hens runs and cap off a four-run first inning for Toledo.

The Red Wings answered back in the second inning. With two outs in the inning and a runner on second a fielding error by Tyler Nevin allowed a run to score for the Red Wings. That one run would be all they got after Bergner was able to escape the inning with just one run allowed.

In the bottom of the second inning, John Valente lead the inning off with an RBI single but was stranded on the bases after Adon retired the next three batters to get the Red Wings out of the inning.

Former Mud Hen Derrick**Hill* hit a leadoff double to start the top of the third inning, then *Darren Baker** worked a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. After getting the first out of the inning, Bergner struck out the last two batters to keep the runners stranded on base to end the top of the third inning.

Grant Witherspoon lead off the home half of the third inning with a double. Adon was able to get the next to outs but then hit Corey Joyce with a pitch to put runners on first and second with two outs. Adon then got the final out of the inning via a strikeout to retire the side.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Red Wings were able to load the bases quickly after a walk and two singles with no outs. Bergner then got a shallow fly ball to left field that wasn't deep enough for a run to score, then a strikeout that came with a chance to get out of the bases-loaded no-out jam. Unfortunately for the Mud Hens, Darren Baker hit a ground ball to second that got into the outfield and scored two runs for the Red Wings to make it a 4-3 ball game. Bergner got the next batter to pop out to end the inning.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Andrew Knapp hit a double to put himself in scoring position for the Mud Hens. Adon then recorded a strikeout for the second out before being replaced by Luis Reyes out of the bullpen, Reyes was able to get the final out of the inning keeping Knapp at second base.

Ronny Garcia entered the game in the top of the fifth inning for Toledo. Jake Alu hit a leadoff single to get the inning started for the Red Wings. In the next at-bat, Alu stole second but the throw from the catcher got away from the fielder and into centerfield which allowed Alu to take third with no outs. Franmil Reyes then hit a single to center field to score Alu and tie the game at 4-4. With one out in the inning, Matt Admas hit a double to left-center field to put runners on second and third. Garcia was able to strike out the next two Red Wing hitters to keep the game tied at four going to the bottom of the fifth inning.

Andre Lipcius drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, then stole second base to put himself in scoring position. With two outs in the inning, Michael Papierski roped a single to left field that scored Lipcius from second to give the Mud Hens a 5-4 lead.

Luis Reyes retired the first two Red Wing batters in order in the top of the sixth inning. After getting the second out Mud Hens manager Anthony Iapoce went to Layne Henderson out of the bullpen. Henderson was able to get the final out of the sixth inning facing just one batter.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jose A. Ferrer entered the game from the bullpen for the Red Wings. Parker Meadows reached first base on an error with one out in the inning. Meadows then stole second base to put himself in scoring position in the next at-bat. Ferrer was able to get the next to Mud Hen's batters out and strand Meadows at second base to end the inning.

The first two batters were able to get on base for the Red Wings with no outs in the top of the seventh inning. Layne Henderson got a ground ball double play then a poorly to end the inning and keep the Red Wings off the board.

Andre Lipcius worked a leadoff walk to start the inning but the next batter grounded into a double play to clear the bases for Ferrer and the Red Wings. Ferrer got the next batter to ground out to end the inning.

Aneurys Zabala entered the game in the eighth inning for the Mud Hens out of the bullpen. Drew Millas hit a leadoff double to put the tying run at second base with no outs. Zabala then struck out three straight batters to strand the runner at second base and hold a one-run lead going to the bottom of the eighth.

Amos Willingham pitched the bottom of the ninth inning for the Red Wings.Michael Papierskileads off the inning with a double for the Mud Hens. Willingham was able to get the next two batters but Parker Meadows slashed a two-out RBI base hit to add insurance for the Mud hens heading to the ninth inning with a 6-4 lead.

To start the ninth inning the Red Wings quickly put the tying run in the scoring post after a walk and a double off of the new pitcher Brendan White who came into pitch the ninth inning for the Mud Hens. With one out in the Nomar Mazara hit a three-run home run to give the Red Wings the lead in the ninth.

Tyler Danish came in to record the save in the bottom of the ninth inning for Rochester. The mud Hens were able to get the tying run to second base but Danish was able to get the final out to complete the comeback for the Red Wings to record the save.
