SOUTH BEND, IN - Following a trade with the Houston Astros, the West Michigan Whitecaps have added outfielder Daz Cameron to their active roster, in a move announced with the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
Cameron, a centerfielder, was acquired in a trade along with pitcher Franklin Perez and catcher Jake Rogers from the Astros in exchange for Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and a player to be named later or cash. Upon his arrival, Cameron slots in as the Tigers #6 prospect by MLB Pipeline, and highest among current Whitecaps position players. Heading into the 2015 season, Cameron ranked as a top-100 prospect in all of baseball (#74) by Baseball America after being chosen by the Astros with the 37th overall pick in the MLB draft that season.
The native of McDonough, GA has played nearly two seasons in the Midwest League, and has played his best baseball in this year's second half. His 2017 season has seen him become a critical part of the success for the Quad Cities River Bandits, hitting .271 with 14 home runs and 73 RBI in 120 games. The right-handed hitter posted a .349 on-base percentage this season with South Bend, and has stolen 32 bases. In the month of August, Cameron hit .377/.460/.566 with three home runs and 19 RBI while posting a 13/15 BB/K ratio in 28 games.
"Daz Cameron is someone that we view as one of the highest-ceiling players in the minors," Tigers general manager Al Avila said in a release. "Cameron is a guy that slipped in the draft because of signability concerns, but has always shown flashes of his dad's play."
Cameron, 20, is the son of former big-league All-Star and Gold Glove winner Mike Cameron, and could join the team as soon as tonight for the Whitecaps against the South Bend Cubs. In a corresponding move, pitcher Jake Shull has been promoted to High-A Lakeland.
The Whitecaps enter play on Friday with a second-half record of 43-22, and an overall mark of 88-44 - both placing best in the Midwest League.
