EASTLAKE, OH – The defending Midwest League champion West Michigan Whitecaps have made a habit of keeping opposing offenses quiet in season openers, with the latest example coming in a 1-0 shutout victory over the Lake County Captains Thursday night at Classic Park.

Thursday’s win marks the fourth consecutive season the Whitecaps have blanked their opponents in the season kickoff contest. The last time West Michigan surrendered as much as a run came back in 2022 in a 5-1 win at Great Lakes. The last three seasons, the Whitecaps have posted shutouts by scores of 1-0 against the Fort Wayne Tincaps in 2023, 2-0 at Lake County in 2024, and 7-0 against the Dayton Dragons in 2025.

As many early season games tend to do, the contest showcased dominant pitching performances on both sides. ‘Caps starting pitcher Hayden Minton, who tossed six scoreless innings without allowing a hit against Lake County last season in Game 2 of the 2025 Eastern Division Championship series, continued his dominance against the Captains, tossing four more hitless frames while striking out five.

The Whitecaps scored their only run on a two-out, fifth-inning RBI-single by Garrett Pennington, plating Woody Hadeen, who enjoyed a four-hit night in his 2026 debut, to give the ‘Caps the 1-0 lead. Hadeen was the only player from either side with a multi-hit performance. The next five innings would feature the Whitecaps dominant bullpen picking up where they left off in 2025, collecting 11 strikeouts over the final five innings of scoreless baseball to give West Michigan a season opening victory.

The Whitecaps begin their season with a 1-0 record, while the Captains fall to 0-1. Reliever Carlos Lequerica (1-0), who posted a record of 8-0 with West Michigan last season, collects his first victory of 2026, while Captains pitcher Melkis Hernandez (0-1) gave up a run in four innings of well-pitched baseball to suffer the tough-luck loss – his first of the season. Righty Logan Berrier pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out three batters in his Whitecaps debut to pick up his first save. Hadeen led the ‘Caps with a 4-for-5 performance, and was the only player from either side with a multi-hit 2026 debut.
