Win streak ends

WICHITA, KS - David Banuelos had a three hit game and drove in the a run for the Wind Surge, but Thomas Saggese exploded offensively for the Cardinals and hit for the cycle. The Springfield Cardinals defeated the Wichita Wind Surge 11-2 and ended their six-game winning streak. The Surge already clinched the series after winning the first four games. The series record now sits at four games for Wichita and one game for Springfield.

The Cardinals took a four run lead in the first inning of the ballgame. Two different runners were able to reach home on wild pitches and Saggese hit a two RBI triple.

Springfield added another run to their lead in the top of the third when Arquimedes Gamboa hit an RBI double on a line drive to right field.

Gamboa got his second hit of the game when he hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth. The Cardinals now commanded an eight run lead.

Saggese scored some more runs in the top of the seventh and eighth inning to extend the Cardinals lead. He hit a solo home run over the left field wall and then hit an RBI double on a line drive to left field. The Cardinals were cruising with a nine run lead.

In the bottom of the eighth the Surge scored their second run of the ballgame. Aaron Sabato hit an RBI single on a ground ball to right field that got deflected by the pitcher.

Aaron Antonini hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth for the Cardinals to pad their lead.

Curtis Taylor made his first start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched one third of an inning and was pulled after giving up four runs off two hits. He struck out three batters but due to passed balls only one counted as an out. He also walked one batter. He was credited with the loss and his record falls to (0-5).

The starting pitcher for Springfield was Alex Cornwell. He pitched five and two thirds innings. He gave up one run off seven hits and struck out six batters. He earned the win and his record improves to (2-1).

The Wichita Wind Surge fall to (23-21, 51-61) and the Springfield Cardinals improve to (21-23, 55-58).

NOTES: The 110 degree first pitch was the hottest recorded first pitch in Riverfront Stadium history. Thomas Saggese for the Cardinals became just the second player to ever hit for the cycle in Riverfront Stadium history.
