Dash Arms Blank Greensboro in Doubleheader Opener

The Winston-Salem Dash (51-41) received seven shutout innings from three pitchers and made one fourth-inning run stand in a 1-0 victory over the Greensboro Grasshoppers (57-35) in game one of Thursday’s doubleheader at Truist Stadium.
Jake Curtis, Max Banks, and Garrett Wright combined to hold Greensboro to just two singles, retiring the final 10 Grasshoppers to preserve the narrow advantage.
Curtis set the tone from the opening pitch. The right-hander retired the first seven hitters he faced before Camden Janik singled with two outs in the third. Curtis responded by striking out Josh Tate and Sammy Stafura to escape the inning.
Greensboro collected its second and final hit in the fourth when Yordany De Los Santos singled with one out. However, Ben Hartl threw him out attempting to steal second before Curtis retired Easton Carmichael to keep the game scoreless.
Winston-Salem broke through in the bottom half.
James Taussig opened the inning with a double into the right-center field gap. Arxy Hernandez followed with an RBI double to center, scoring Taussig and giving the Dash a 1-0 lead.
That was all the pitching staff needed.
Curtis completed five scoreless innings while allowing two hits and striking out four. Banks retired Greensboro in order in the sixth, and Wright followed with a perfect seventh to close out the victory.
Hernandez and Taussig delivered the only run of the game, while the Dash pitching staff faced just two batters over the minimum in the seven-inning shutout.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (July 23rd) – The Winston-Salem Dash (51-42) battled back from a five-run deficit and brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but the Greensboro Grasshoppers (58-35) held on for a 7-6 victory in game two of Thursday’s doubleheader at Truist Stadium.
After Winston-Salem erased an early deficit and carried a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning, Greensboro responded with five runs in the frame to take control of the game.
The Grasshoppers struck first in the second. Brian Sanchez singled home Axiel Plaz before Josh Tate added an RBI single to give Greensboro a 2-0 advantage.
Winston-Salem began to chip away in the fourth. George Wolkow doubled and later scored on a groundout from Calvin Harris, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Dash surged ahead one inning later.
Derek Cerda walked and Bryce Eblin doubled before Ely Brown drove home the tying run with a single to right. Ryan Burrowes followed with an RBI double, and Wolkow brought Brown home on a fielder’s choice to put Winston-Salem in front, 4-2.
The lead disappeared in the sixth.
Greensboro loaded the bases with two walks and a double before Plaz drew a bases-loaded walk. Sanchez followed with a two-run double into left-center field to put the Grasshoppers back in front. Tate added an RBI groundout, and a balk brought home another run to extend the advantage to 7-4.
Winston-Salem mounted one final push in the seventh.
Wolkow opened the inning with his third double of the game and advanced to third on a groundout. Harris then launched a two-run home run to left-center field, pulling the Dash within one at 7-6.
James Taussig followed with a single to keep the rally alive, but Greensboro recorded the final out to strand the potential tying run and secure the victory.
Wolkow finished with three doubles and scored three times, while Harris drove in three runs. Brown, Burrowes, and Eblin each added two hits as the Dash finished with 10 hits in the loss.
