Frey’s Extra-Inning Blast Lifts Asheville Past Dash

The Winston-Salem Dash (56-47) battled back from an early two-run deficit to force extra innings, but Ethan Frey launched a three-run home run in the 10th to lift the Asheville Tourists (34-68) to a 5-2 victory on Tuesday night at Truist Stadium.

After the teams traded scoreless frames from the seventh through the ninth, Asheville delivered the decisive swing with two outs in the 10th.

The Tourists struck first in the second inning. Anthony Huezo singled and advanced on a balk before Kyle Walker reached on a fielder’s choice. After Walker stole second, Nick Monistere lined an RBI single up the middle to give Asheville a 1-0 lead.

Asheville added another run in the third. Justin Thomas Jr. walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Xavier Neyens, extending the advantage to 2-0.

Winston-Salem cut into the deficit in the bottom half.

Ben Hartl and Ely Brown worked walks before Javier Mogollon doubled to right field, scoring Hartl and moving Roch Cholowsky to third. However, the Dash stranded both runners and remained behind 2-1.

The Dash finally pulled even in the sixth.

Kyle Lodise walked and stole second before Kaleb Freeman lined an RBI single to right field, tying the game at 2-2.

From there, the pitching staffs controlled the game.

Seth Keener and Garrett Wright combined for three scoreless innings out of the Winston-Salem bullpen, while Asheville relievers held the Dash without a run through the ninth.

The Tourists broke through in the 10th.

With Monistere beginning the inning at second, Aric McAtee recorded two quick outs before walking Neyens. Frey then attacked the first pitch he saw and drove a three-run home run over the wall in left field, giving Asheville a 5-2 lead.

Winston-Salem threatened in the bottom half when Mogollon singled to move Cholowsky to third, but the Dash could not bring either runner home.

Mogollon finished with two hits and an RBI, while Freeman drove in the game-tying run. Justin Sinibaldi allowed two runs across six innings before the Asheville homer decided the game in extras. BOX SCORE
