ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Worcester Red Sox (42-35) shut out the Rochester Red Wings (40-37) by a 10-0 final on Saturday night at Frontier Field to extend their winning streak to a season-high six in a row.
Connor Wong doubled with one out in the top of the first, advanced to third on a flyout, and stole home to put Worcester up 1-0. It was the first straight steal of home for Red Sox Triple-A player since Tim Howard stole home for the Pawtucket Red Sox on April 24, 1995.
The WooSox added three runs in the second. Two came on a double from Pedro Castellanos, and the other came on a two-out single from Wong.
Over his last 34 games, Wong is hitting .324 with 17 extra-base hits and 15 runs batted in.
Christin Stewart gave the WooSox a 5-0 lead with a solo home run in the third. It was Stewart’s 14th homer of the year, which is now the best mark on the team.
Johan Mieses doubled home a run in the fifth inning to put Worcester on top 6-0. Yolmer Sanchez hit a three-run homer later in the inning to extend the WooSox lead to 9-0.
Jeter Downs belted his 13th homer of the year in the ninth to make it a 10-0 game.
The WooSox had nine extra-base hits, one short of their season high.
Brian Keller struck out a season-high eight batters over five scoreless innings. The five innings were also a season best for Keller.
Geoff Hartlieb and Eduard Bazardo finished off the shutout over the final four frames. Bazardo has not allowed a run over his last six appearances.
Worcester has now won 11 of its last 12 games.
