AUGUST 3rd ROCHESTER (49-59) at PAWTUCKET (49-59) 7:05 pm
Rochester Red Wings LHP Stephen Gonsalves (7-3, 3.04) vs. Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Mike Shawaryn (NR)
Battle for Third - The Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings (AAA-Minnesota) open a 3-game weekend series at McCoy Stadium beginning tonight at 7:05 pm (live on YurView on COX). The clubs come into play tonight in a tie for 3rd-place in the IL North with identical 49-59 records although both are miles behind front-running Lehigh Valley (-18 GB) with 31 games remaining this season (15 at home for the PawSox and 16 on the road).
Pitching vs. Hitting - PawSox pitchers are 2nd in the International League with their 3.47 ERA. Rochester leads at 3.41. On the other hand, Rochester batters are last in the league with their .225 average while the PawSox are next to last at .243.
Home for the Weekend - The PawSox host Rochester this evening on Gnome-ar Garciaparra Garden Gnome Night for the first 3,000 fans; tomorrow (Saturday) at 6:15 pm (on Super Heroes Night with another post-game fireworks spectacular and a free youth clinic prior to the game from 2:00 - 3:15 pm); and Sunday at 1:35 pm (with the 21st Annual PawSox FanFest following the game). After this brief 3-game series, the Sox will have just three homestands remaining (a 7-gamer from August 13-19, 3-games from August 28-30, and the final two games of the season on September 2 & 3).
Sweep (kind of) After Swept - The PawSox were credited with a one-game "sweep" the last time these two teams faced each other about one month ago in Rochester in the most improbable PawSox victory of the season. On the night of July 4th at Frontier Field in Rochester, the Sox rallied for 4 runs with two outs in the top of the 9th to stun the Wings, 6-5. Game two of that series the next night was suspended due to rain after a ½-inning with the game scoreless. It will be resumed on August 21 at 5:05 pm when Pawtucket returns to Rochester for what will amount to a 4-game series (the suspended game and the regular game on August 21 and then games on August 22 & 23). The last time these clubs met here in Pawtucket it resulted in a 2-game sweep for the Red Wings as Rochester swept the first half of that holiday week home and home series on the nights of July 2 & 3 at McCoy Stadium…the Red Wings rolling to a 6-2 victory in the opener and then holding on for a 2-1 win the next night.
