Summary
Akron RubberDucks left-hander Tanner Tully (2-3) pitched six strong innings, allowing only one run, but four Erie SeaWolves combined to pitch a six-hit shutout in a 2-0 series-opening at UPMC Park Tuesday night.
Turning Point
In the bottom of the sixth inning, SeaWolves center fielder Derek Hill hit a leadoff double to left-center field against Tully. Third baseman Isaac Paredes advanced Hill to third base with a groundout. Designated hitter Taylor Motter hit a sacrifice fly to center field. It was the only run against Tully.
Mound Presence
Tully pitched six innings for the fourth time in six starts but took a second straight loss with the offense being shut out. He worked around singles in the first and fourth innings, a walk in the second inning and a leadoff double in the fifth inning. Left-hander David Speer began the seventh inning, allowing consecutive singles to right fielder Jose Azocar and catcher Jake Rogers, and shortstop Sergio Alcántara hit an RBI infield single to extend Erie's lead to 2-0. Right-hander Argenis Angulo pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings - his seventh straight scoreless outing, spanning 10 1/3 innings. For Erie, left-hander Gregory Soto and right-hander Fernando Perez (1-0) each pitched scoreless three innings. Perez worked around a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning. Left-hander Trent Szkutnik pitched two perfect innings, before right-hander Drew Carlton pitched a scoreless ninth inning, including a game-ending ground-ball double play.
Duck Tales
Designated hitter Li-Jen Chu was the only RubberDuck with two hits, including a second-inning, one-out double, but he was stranded at third base. Second baseman Jorma Rodriguez and third baseman Tyler Krieger hit consecutive fifth-inning, two-out singles before Perez escaped. In the sixth inning, center fielder Daniel Johnson hit a leadoff single and stole second base but was caught off second on a fielder's choice. Akron later loaded the bases with two outs, but Perez got catcher Logan Ice to fly out to center field. Erie took the lead the next half inning, and their pitchers faced the minimum the rest of the way.
