Claws Rally, Fall Short 11-8 in Hagerstown

The BlueClaws couldn't overcome a nine-run deficit and fell 11-8 in Hagerstown on Thursday.

HAGERSTOWN, MD - In a game they trailed 9-0, the BlueClaws had the go-ahead run at the plate in the seventh inning and the tying run at the plate in the eighth and ninth but fell one hit short in dropping the series opener 11-8 in Hagerstown.
Jordan Mills got the last eight outs for his third save, getting Cord Sandberg to ground out to end the eighth and Raul Rivas to end the ninth.
The Suns (24-15) are now 6-1 against the BlueClaws and move to 2.5 games ahead of Lakewood (22-18). The teams have three more meetings this weekend and seven more in the first half.
Aldrem Corredor became the first player ever with four extra-base hits against the BlueClaws, doubling three times and tripling once to help the Suns build their lead. Hagerstown also had 10 extra base hits (and just four singles), the first time the BlueClaws have ever allowed 10 extra base hits in a game.
Ranger Suárez (2-1) gave up three runs in two innings, including home runs by Oliver Ortiz and Anderson Franco, and the Suns got six off Jonathan Hennigan to build their 9-0 lead.
The BlueClaws got back in the game with six runs in the sixth inning. The rally was keyed by a Carlos Duran three-run double and included an RBI double by both Raul Rivas and Darick Hall.
After the Suns got a run in the sixth, Cord Sandberg hit his third home run of the season to pull the BlueClaws within 10-8. After two more hits after the home run off Mick Van Vossen, Hagerstown went to lefty Jordan Mills with the go-ahead run at the plate. Mills got Carlos Duran to fly out to center and struck out Daniel Brito to end the inning.
Tyler Watson (3-1) was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs, four earned, in 5.1 innings of work.
Blake Perkins and Corredor each had four hits for Hagerstown, with Perkins tying the record of four runs scored by a BlueClaws opponent.
Raul Rivas led the BlueClaws with three hits, his fourth multi-hit game in seven with Lakewood. Mickey Moniak, Cord Sandberg, Edgar Cabral and Carlos Duran had two hits apiece.
Trevor Bettencourt got the last five outs for Lakewood and has thrown 11.1 straight scoreless innings.
The series with the Suns continues on Friday night. RHP Adonis Medina (1-2) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Sterling Sharp (1-2).
