CHARLESTON, S.C. - With an announced crowd of 3,411 in their penultimate home game of the season, the Charleston RiverDogs accomplished a longtime organizational goal, eclipsing the 300,000-mark in attendance for the first time in the franchise's history.
After an additional crowd of 5,000-plus the following evening, the Charleston club built on their record-total up to 305,622, the third consecutive season that the RiverDogs set an attendance record.
"There's a lot of excitement and pride around here, along with a sense of accomplishment for reaching this target that has been a longtime goal for our staff," said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. "There's also a sense of togetherness mainly because of the fans."
The club enjoyed 10 sellouts during the course of the season, also surpassing a previous franchise mark on the final day of the regular season.
With another record-setting year, Charleston outpaced last year's previous benchmark of 293,161 in 2016, one year after the club welcomed 292,661 fans through the gates, breaking the then attendance record set in 2007 (284,664).
It was a memorable year on the field as well, as the RiverDogs made their second consecutive trip to the postseason, falling two games to one in the best-of-three Division Series to Greenville. It was the second time the Yankees' Class-A affiliate made it back to the playoffs since 2004-05. The RiverDogs finished with their second straight 77-win campaign between the regular and postseason, both the most wins since 2008.
