Loons Punish Dayton Bullpen, Top Dragons 13-5

Dayton, Ohio—The Great Lakes Loons scored six runs in the fifth inning and added four more in the sixth on the way to a 13-5 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday night. The Loons have won the first two games of the six-game series.

A crowd of 7,843 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.

Recap: Great Lakes took the lead with an unearned run in the second inning and continued to hold that 1-0 lead going to the fifth inning. Great Lakes starting pitcher Hyun-Seok Jang did not allow a base runner until Ryan McCrystal’s one-out single in the fourth inning. Jang struck out 10 batters over the first five innings of his outing.

In the fifth, the Loons broke the game open with six runs against Dayton reliever Bryce Archie, collecting five hits in the inning including a three-run home run by Emil Morales as Great Lakes extended their lead to 7-0.

The Dragons had a productive turn at the plate in the bottom of the fifth, getting a lead-off double to the wall in left by John Michael Faile, a two-out, run-scoring single by Alfredo Alcantara, and an RBI triple by Kyle Henley to make it 7-2.

But Great Lakes tacked on four more runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh off Dayton reliever Brady Afthim to build their lead to 13-2. The Dragons closed out the scoring with three runs in the eighth, getting a run-scoring single by Alcantara, a bases loaded walk by Ryan McCrystal, and a run that scored on a passed ball.

The Dragons finished the night with eight hits. Faile and Alcantara each had two.

Dragons starting pitcher Deivi Villafana pitched well but was charged with the loss to fall to 0-2. He worked four innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. It was a tough night for Dayton relievers Archie and Afthim. They combined to work three innings, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits as each pitcher surrendered six runs. Andrew Shaffner closed out the night with two scoreless innings for Dayton.
