Indianapolis, IN --- Jason Coats singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Durham Bulls past the Indianapolis Indians 4-3 on Friday night at Victory Field.
After the Indians (48-49) tied the game in the eighth, Durham capitalized on a key mistake in the 10th. With Jesús Sánchez placed at second base by rule to start the 10th, Kevin Padlo flied out to shallow right, with Sanchez holding at second. During Coats' at-bat, reliever Tyler Lyons (L, 4-2) uncorked a wild pitch over the head of his catcher to push Sanchez to third base. With a 1-2 count and the infield drawn in, Coats hit a hard groundball single to right-center to bring Sanchez home for a 4-3 lead.
Hoby Milner (S, 6) entered for the last of the 10th, allowing a sacrifice bunt to move Steven Baron to move to third as the tying run. An intentional walk followed, but Milner then induced a foul popout by Ke'Bryan Hayes that was caught by Kean Wong to preserve the lead. The game ended on an athletc stop of a one-hop liner at shortstop by Lucius Fox, who threw out Will Craig at first base to end the game.
Jake Faria (W, 6-2) worked 2 1/3 innings, permitting three hits and one run to earn the win.
Durham took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run by Kean Wong against starter Alex McRae. Indy tied the game in the last of the first when rehabbing Erik González drove out a home run to center against Durham starter Anthony Banda to tie the game 1-1.
In the seventh, Kevin Padlo cracked a two-run shot against McRae to put Durham (59-40) ahead 3-1.
The Indians scored a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to tie the game. Faria stranded two baserunners in the ninth to force Durham's sixth extra inning game of the year.
The Bulls maintained their 1 1/2 game lead over second-place Gwinnett, which won Friday night.
The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 PM ET with Arturo Reyes (6-4, 4.40) opposing Cam Vieaux (2-1, 5.53).
