RENO, Nevada - The Reno Aces (25-16) scored early and often, eventually shellacking the Round Rock Express (16-25) by a final score of 14-4 in Thursday afternoon's series finale at Greater Nevada Field. The victory gave Reno a 3-1 series win.
E-Train RHP Tyler Wagner (1-4, 7.94) suffered the loss after giving up 10 runs, only nine of which were earned, on nine hits in six innings of work. The former Ace walked three and struck out two while allowing three home runs. Former Round Rock and current Reno starter LHP Eric Jokisch (3-0, 6.39) picked up the win, limiting the Express to three runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. He struck out five and walked two.
Reno blew the game wide open with a seven-run second inning. RF Zach Borenstein opened the frame with a double before LF Jack Reinheimer reached on a fielding error by 1B Preston Beck . After a Hank Conger walk, C Ronnie Freeman and 2B Ildemaro Vargas teamed up for back-to-back two-run doubles. SS Ketel Marte singled, then 1B Christian Walker stepped to the plate and launched a three-run homer, capping off the seven-run frame.
The Aces' offensive onslaught continued in the second inning as Reinheimer blasted a leadoff homer. Conger worked a walk but was erased at second on an ensuing Kristopher Negrón fielder's choice out. Consecutive singles courtesy of Vargas and Marte pushed their team's lead to 9-0.
The Express put up three runs in the fourth inning as the first five hitters reached base safely. SS Jurickson Profar , DH Ronald Guzmán and C Brett Nicholas teamed up for three straight singles to promptly load the bases. LF Drew Stubbs worked a walk to push a run home, then RF Travis Snider doubled Round Rock's run total with an RBI single. In the next at-bat, Beck poked a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Nicholas to tag and score from third.
The home side added solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Walker notched his second homer of the afternoon with a solo shot in the sixth. In the next frame, RHP R.J. Alvarez walked the bases loaded before a costly wild pitch allowed Reinheimer to score from third.
The final E-Train run came in the eighth inning. Reno reliever RHP Matt Stites walked the bases loaded before losing control of Snider, walking the outfielder on four pitches to cut the Round Rock deficit to 11-4.
The Aces gave the Express one final parting gift in the form of a three-run eighth inning. With LHP Jimmy Reyes on in relief, Walker jumped aboard via Round Rock's third error of the day. Rivero followed up with a single before Borenstein and Reinheimer notched a pair of RBI base hits to drive home a pair of runs. Negron pushed Reno's 14th and final run across with a groundout that allowed Borenstein to come home from third.
Round Rock now returns to the friendly confines of Dell Diamond to open an eight-game homestand against the Salt Lake Bees and Las Vegas 51s. Friday's series opener is scheduled to feature E-Train RHP Dillon Gee
(1-4, 5.30)
against Bees RHP Luis Diaz (1-2, 7.65). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
