OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma - When the Round Rock Express take the field against the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Sunday, June 11, the game will have special significance for Express broadcaster Mike Capps. Tonight's contest marks the 2,500th radio broadcast in Capps' 18-year career with the team.
Throughout a 25-year career in the news industry, Capps covered the Gulf War, Midwest Floods, overthrow of the Haitian government, the siege in Waco, and many other notable international events as a reporter for CNN. He traded his television camera for a radio microphone prior to Round Rock's inaugural season in 2000 and has been describing the sights and sounds of E-Train baseball ever since.
"To leave the darkness of the news business and come to the light of baseball has been a life-changing experience for me. It has made me a better person," Capps said. "This has been a personal renaissance. I have a love affair with this game and the people involved in it. If I can do 2,500 more, that would be fine and dandy."
In addition to his 2,500 regular season broadcasts, Capps has called 46 Round Rock playoff games. He has seen six different Express managers and over 500 players, including the likes of Roy Oswalt, Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Yu Darvish. Capps has racked up nearly 350,000 miles traveling with the team, almost 500 plane flights and over 100 bus rides while visiting 26 different cities in both the Texas League and Pacific Coast League.
"I want to thank Reid and the entire Ryan family for the opportunity to have the best job in the world. None of this would be possible without the love and support from my friends and family, as well as Chris Almendarez, Tim Jackson and Laura Fragoso, and of course, each and every Round Rock Express fan," Capps said. "It is a pure delight to get to broadcast the beautiful game of baseball to you on a nightly basis."
Capps' 2,500th broadcast kicks off at 5:50 p.m. on 104.9 The Horn and will be streaming online at hornfm.com. The Express face the Dodgers at 6:05 p.m. at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
