Drive Alum Payton Tolle Takes the Mound for Game 1 in the Bronx

From the mound at Fluor Field to one of baseball’s biggest stages, former Greenville Drive pitcher Payton Tolle will add another remarkable chapter to his rapid rise through the Boston Red Sox organization Tuesday night.

The Red Sox have named Tolle their starting pitcher for Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees, sending the 23-year-old left-hander to the mound at Yankee Stadium for the opening game of the best-of-three postseason series. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

For Drive fans, Tolle’s latest opportunity continues an incredible journey that began in Greenville just last season.

Tolle opened the 2025 season with the Drive, making 10 appearances, including nine starts, and striking out 70 batters in just 43.2 innings. He posted a 3.92 ERA while quickly establishing himself as one of the most electric arms in the Red Sox farm system.

Among his most memorable performances at Fluor Field came on May 3, 2025, when Tolle overwhelmed the Asheville Tourists with 12 strikeouts over five scoreless innings in a 16-0 Greenville victory.

That dominance helped launch an extraordinary climb through the organization. Tolle was promoted from Greenville to Double-A Portland on June 24, 2025, advanced to Triple-A Worcester in August and made his Major League debut with Boston later that same summer. He became the first former Drive player to begin a season in Greenville and reach the Major Leagues before that season ended.

Now, a little more than a year after pitching in the South Atlantic League, Tolle will take the baseball for Boston in a postseason opener against its biggest rival.

Tolle has been outstanding for the Red Sox in 2026, finishing the regular season 9-6 with a 3.03 ERA and 171 strikeouts across 148.2 innings and 26 starts.

He has been especially effective against the Yankees. In two starts against New York this season, Tolle went 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA, striking out 18 while allowing Yankees hitters to bat just .093 against him.

Red Sox manager Chad Tracy cited Tolle’s power arsenal and temperament in choosing the rookie for the Game 1 assignment.

Boston will face Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler in the series opener. Schlittler finished the regular season 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA and 239 strikeouts.

The matchup also represents another chapter in one of baseball’s most storied rivalries. Boston enters the postseason as the American League’s No. 5 seed, while New York earned the No. 4 seed and home-field advantage for the Wild Card Series. The Yankees won the 2026 regular-season series between the clubs, 7-6.

But for Greenville baseball fans, Tuesday night will carry some additional significance.

Less than two years after taking the mound at Fluor Field as one of the Red Sox organization’s rising prospects, Payton Tolle will take the ball at Yankee Stadium with Boston’s postseason hopes riding on his left arm.

It is another example of the player-development pipeline that connects Fluor Field to Fenway Park — and, in this case, all the way to October baseball in the Bronx.
