The second week of Spring Training saw the Atlanta Braves win just one of six games while tying twice, bringing its overall record to 7-5 in Grapefruit League play.
Many former and future Gwinnett Stripers have had the chance to play for the big-league club.
Here’s an overview of who’s stood out this past week:
Former Stripers:
C Drake Baldwin (2023-24):
Last Week: 3 games, .333/.429/.333, 1 BB, 1 SO
This Spring: 9 games, .333/.455/.389, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 1 SO
The Braves top prospect recorded his second multi-hit game of the spring with a 2-for-3 day on March 7 at Minnesota. Aiming for a spot on the Opening Day roster for the first time in his career, Baldwin is tied for second on the big-league club in hits.
C Chadwick Tromp (2021-24):
Last Week: 4 games, .286/.375/.429, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO
This Spring: 7 games, .250/.308/.333, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO
Battling with Baldwin for an Opening Day catcher spot, the 29-year-old collected a multi-hit game of his own on March 9 at Boston. Tromp finished a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and a walk.
P Ian Anderson (2021-24):
Last Week: 1 game, 1.13 ERA, 3.1 IP, 1 H, 4 BB, 4 SO
This Spring: 3 games, 1-1, 1.13 ERA, 8.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 9 BB, 5 SO
Making one start on March 6 vs. Miami, Anderson worked around four walks as he held the Marlins to just one run. Being one of four Braves pitchers to throw eight or more innings this spring, Anderson has allowed the least amount of hits in that group with two.
Prospective Stripers:
INF Matthew Batten
Last Week: 3 games, .800/.800/1.000, 1 2B, 2 RBI
This Spring: 5 games, .500/.500/.625, 1 2B, 2 RBI
In his three starts for the Braves this week, Batten recorded hits in each game he played in. The former San Diego Padres infielder came through for his new club on March 8 vs. Pittsburgh, finishing 2-for-2 with a double and a walk-off hit to cap off a four-run ninth inning.
INF Garrett Cooper
Last Week: 5 games, .333/.500/.778, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO
This Spring: 10 games, .250/.375/.465, 3 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 7 SO
Cooper was busy last week, seeing action in five of the Braves’ six games. Cooper went 1-for-2 with a double after entering midway through Atlanta’s loss on March 4 vs. Minnesota and the infielder ended the week with a two-run homer off Liam Hendriks in a loss to the Red Sox on March 9.
P Enyel De Los Santos
Last Week: 2 games, 2.2 IP, 4 SO
This Spring: 4 games, 4.2 IP, 4 SO
De Los Santos has continued to be unhittable this spring, continuing his success with a pair of scoreless outings last week. The righty struck out the side in an inning of work on March 3 at Tampa Bay and punched out one in 1.2 scoreless innings on March 6 vs. Miami.
Players Optioned to Gwinnett:
OF Carlos D. Rodriguez (March 7), RHP Rolddy Munoz (March 7), RHP Domingo Gonzalez (March 7).
