Baker's Dozen: Renegades bats bash BlueClaws 13-0

Wappingers Falls, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2023) — Brock Selvidge and Clay Aguilar combined on a four-hit shutout as the Hudson Valley Renegades thumped the Jersey Shore BlueClaws 13-0 on Tuesday night at Heritage Financial Park.
The Renegades opened up the scoring with a three-run bottom of the first inning against Gabriel Cotto. After a one-out double by Jared Serna and a walk to Jesus Rodriguez, Antonio Gómez doubled home both runners to give the Renegades a 2-0 lead. The next batter, Alexander Vargas, then lashed a double down the left field line to score Gómez and extend the ‘Gades lead to 3-0.
After Cotto (2-5) tossed a scoreless second, the Renegades plated another run in the third on a Christopher Familia sacrifice fly to right field that scored Vargas, who doubled to begin the frame.
Hudson Valley carried a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning where they sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs against Malik Binns. After an error opened up the inning, Rafael Flores drive in Vargas with a single, Anthony Hall brought in a run with a groundout, and Jared Serna drove in two more with a single. Rodriguez closed the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to plate Serna and extend the lead to 9-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wen-Hui Pan issued a walk to Cowles and a single to Familia before Flores clubbed a three-run home run to left field to make it 12-0 Hudson Valley. The ‘Gades closed out the score line with an RBI groundout from Vargas in the seventh that scored Serna. Vargas finished the night 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Flores finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run, four RBIs, and a walk.

Brock Selvidge allowed just one hit through the first five innings. After retiring 12 straight batters, Otto Kemp began the sixth inning with a double. Jared Carr reached on an error and Bryan Rincon singled to load the bases with one out. Selvidge (4-1) struck out Kendall Simmons and Gabriel Rincones Jr to end the only threat by the BlueClaws against him.
Clay Aguilar finished off the contest, striking out five in 2.1 scoreless innings. The southpaw extended his scoreless streak to 12.2 innings. Aguilar and Selvidge combined for the ‘Gades 12th shutout of the season.
Postgame Notes: The shutout was the 12th of the season thrown by Hudson Valley, just two shy of matching the franchise record of 14 accomplished in the 2018 and 2021 seasons… The Renegades tied a season-high with six stolen bases on Tuesday night, accomplished on four other occasions, most recently on Aug. 20 at Brooklyn.
The Renegades and BlueClaws continue their six-game series on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 on the Renegades Baseball Network. Hudson Valley sends RHP Yorlin Calderon (0-0, 9.00) to the hill opposite of RHP Christian McGowan (0-0, 3.75) for Jersey Shore.
