WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY-The Hudson Valley Renegades saw their four-game winning streak come to a close Thursday night as they fell to the Lowell Spinners 5-2 at Dutchess Stadium.
The Spinners got on the board in the fourth. After retiring the first nine men he faced, Renegades starter Mikey York gave up a solo homer to Lowell leftfielder Nick Hamilton (1) to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Lowell added to their lead in the sixth as with no one on and two out, rightfielder Juan Barriento (2) blasted a solo homer of his own over the leftfield wall to increase the Spinners lead to 2-0.
The Renegades were held hitless through the first five innings by Lowell starter Jason Groome. Reliever Lukas Young would pitch another hitless inning in the sixth before the Renegades offense got revved up in the seventh. Rojas and catcher Rafelin Lorenzo started the inning with back-to-back singles. Rightfielder Angel Perez then stepped to the plate and with runners at first and third, hit a groundball that was misplayed by Lowell second baseman Yomar Valentin. The play allowed one run to score and cut the deficit to 2-1. Hudson Valley then loaded the bases with one out when shortstop Deion Tansel grounded out to second to score the tying run and knot the game at two apiece.
The Spinners, however, would retake the lead with three runs in the eighth inning. With runners at first and second with two out, reliever Sam Long hit Spinners designated hitter Aneury Tavárez on a 2-2 pitch to keep the inning alive and load the bases. The next hitter, third baseman Stanley Espinal, then cleared the bases with a double to centerfield and give Lowell a 5-2 lead.
Hudson Valley would load the bases in the ninth inning, however closer Dominic LoBrutto struck out Gustave to end the game and give Lowell the win.
The Renegades had only four hits tonight, all singles. Meanwhile, the Spinners had nine hits including a 2-4 night by Espinal who doubled and drove in three runs. Barriento went 2-4 with a homerun, RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Raiwinson Lameda chipped in by going 3-4 with three singles.
Getting the win for Lowell was Devon Fisher (2-0) who tossed two scoreless innings and allowed a hit. The loss went to Renegades reliever Drew Strotman (0-1) who gave up the go-ahead run on two hits in 1.1 innings in his professional debut. Sam Long allowed the go-ahead hit for Hudson Valley as he gave up two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Hudson Valley finishes its series tomorrow against the Spinners with a 7:05 start. The Renegades will start Hector Lopez (0-1, 5.40 ERA) against Boston Red Sox pitcher Brian Johnson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) who will pitch the first three innings on a rehab start for Lowell.
