COLUMBIA, SC - Rodolfo Duran finished a single shy of the cycle as the BlueClaws pounded out a season-high 16 hits in an 8-1 win on Thursday in Columbia in the first game of the second half.
Duran, who flew to center in the ninth when he had a chance to become the first BlueClaw in franchise history to hit for the cycle, homered for his eight of the year and joined Jake Scheiner and Quincy Nieporte as BlueClaws with three hits in the win.
Lakewood (1-0, 42-28) got to 14-games over .500 on the season and won their third straight game. Columbia (0-1, 34-34) fell back to .500 with the loss.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead off fireflies starter Anthony Kay. An RBI double by Jake Scheiner put Lakewood up 1-0 and Colby Fitch doubled in Scheiner for a 2-0 Lakewood lead. Daniel Brito then singled to left with Fitch scoring on an error on left fielder Matt Winaker. Finally, Quincy Nieporte dobuled in a run for a 4-0 lead.
Duran tripled home Scheiner in the third to put Lakewood up 5-0.
After Kay came out after four innings, allowing five runs, the BlueClaws added two in the fifth off reliever Darwin Ramos. Duran doubled in Scheiner and Daniel Brito's SAC fly brought home Duran for a 7-0 BlueClaws lead.
That was more than enough for Lakewood starter Kyle Young (2-3). Young, who bested Kay in a matchup of Long Island left-handers, gave up one run over six innings to earn his second win of the season.
Duran added his home run in the seventh inning, his eighth of the year for a 20-year old that did not homer at all with Williamsport last year.
Daniel Brito and Jose Antequera added two hits apiece for the BlueClaws. Eight of the nine Lakewood starters had hits while five had multi-hit games in the victory.
Julian Garcia threw two scoreless innings in relief and Luis Cedeno tossed a scoreless ninth in his BlueClaws debut.
The BlueClaws look for a fourth straight win on Friday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Spencer Howard (3-6) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Tony Dibrell (2-3).
