Kannapolis Holds Off Late Claws Rally, Win 5-4

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Kannapolis held off a BlueClaws rally and topped the BlueClaws 5-4 on Sunday at Intimidators Stadium to take three of four in the series.
Lakewood (10-19/39-60) falls to 21 games under .500 for the second time this year and the Intimidators (16-15/44-55) take five of the eight meetings between the two teams this year.
The BlueClaws had the bases loaded in the eighth but Jacob Lindgren, who got the last four outs for his first save, got Hunter Stovall to ground out. Then in the ninth, Lakewood had the lead-off man on base but Yerwin Trejo grounded into a double play before Jonathan Guzman flew out to end the game.
Leading 1-0, Kannapolis extended their lead to three on a two-run Alex Destino home run in the third inning off Kevin Gowdy.
The BlueClaws got back in the game, getting three runs in the fourth. Hunter Stovall singled home two runs off starter Davis Martin and Malvin Matos followed with an RBI single to tie the game at three. Gowdy came out after four innings, allowing three runs.
Andrew Schultz (0-2) came on in the fifth and gave up two unearned runs to give Kannapolis a 5-3 lead.
The BlueClaws got a run back in the sixth when Cole Stobbe hit his ninth home run of the year.
Intimidators starter Davis Martin (6-8) came out after six innings, allowing four runs while striking out eight.
Rafael Marchan and Malvin Matos each had two hits for the BlueClaws in the loss.
Omar Maldonado threw three scoreless innings in his BlueClaws debut. 
The BlueClaws head home and start a series with Charleston on Tuesday night. LHP Taylor Lehman will start the series opener for Lakewood.
