LAKEWOOD, NJ - Nick Maton hit a first inning grand slam as the BlueClaws went on to topple Rome 7-2 on Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Park.
The BlueClaws (35-16/76-44) are now 24-8 in their last 32 games and 32 games over .500 for the first time in franchise history. They took the first of three with Rome (23-27/63-56), who, like the BlueClaws, won a first half SAL division championship.
Maton's grand slam was the second in as many games for Lakewood after Madison Stokes hit one on Monday in Hickory. Colby Fitch hit the first of the three BlueClaws grand slams this year on April 10th at West Virginia.
The BlueClaws added a run in the second on an RBI single from Rodolfo Duran and one in the third on a SAC fly from Jose Antequera.
Lakewood starter Damon Jones (8-6) gave up one hit over five scoreless innings while striking out six to earn his eighth win of the season. Luis Ramirez followed Jones with two scoreless innings and Luis Cedeno gave up the only two runs on a double by Justin Dean in the eighth inning.
Rome starter Keith Weisenberg (1-3) gave up six runs on seven hits in four innings and took the loss.
Maton had two hits while Simon Muzziotti and Madison Stokes added two apiece as well. Jake Scheiner was 1-2 with two walks.
The BlueClaws and Braves continue their series on Thursday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Gustavo Armas (1-1) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Jasseel De La Cruz (3-4).
