The season came to an end for the Marlins, but some of their young prospects showed Thursday that the club's future remains bright.
Miami's fourth-ranked prospect Jazz Chisholm doubled and walked in a 1-for-3 effort en route to a 7-0 loss to the Braves in Game 3 of their National League Division Series.
Getting his first Major League postseason start, the 22-year-old batted sixth in the order and played eight innings at second base.
In Chisholm's first plate appearance vs. right-handed starter Kyle Wright, he drew a five-pitch leadoff walk in the second inning.
Baseball's No. 61 overall prospect delivered against righty Shane Greene in the ninth, clobbering a double to left field in his final at-bat of the season.
Defensively, Chisholm was perfect and recorded three putouts.
“I think he's going to have to make sure he continues to mature in his work, especially at the plate [and in] his discipline and work more than anything else,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly told reporters. “He sees the ball really well. He sees it early, which is a trait of guys that really end up really hitting that are able to [see] balls so quickly and recognize. So his energy's been great, he works extremely hard. We just got to make sure it works consistently, works smart.”
Top Miami prospect Sixto Sanchez got the start, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts over three innings. Although he took the loss, the right-hander clocked the 20 fastest pitches of the game, including one at 100.3 mph, per Baseball Savant. Ninth-ranked Trevor Rogers went 1 2/3 innings, giving up three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and a walk. He fanned two in his only appearance of the postseason.
Top Braves prospect Cristian Pache entered as a defensive replacement for Nick Markakis in right in the ninth and caught the final two flyouts to seal the series sweep.
In other action:
Dodgers 12, Padres 3
One of 10 relief pitchers used in their final game of the season, Luis Patiño tossed two-thirds of an inning for the Padres, yielding one run on a hit and a walk. The No. 3 Padres prospect recorded the final out of the third before allowing a double and a walk to start the fourth. He got Justin Turner to fly out, but Tim Hill entered and one of the inherited runners subsequently crossed the plate. Fourth-ranked San Diego prospect Luis Campusano struck out on three pitches as a pinch-hitter in the eighth. Box score
Yankees 5, Rays 1
Coming in as the hottest hitter on the Rays, No. 19 prospect Randy Arozarena went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. The outfielder is hitting .500 this postseason heading into Friday's series finale. Box score
