Welcome to the 26th season of Myrtle Beach Pelicans baseball! We can’t thank you enough for making the prior 25 years such a success. We’re so excited to welcome you to Pelicans Ballpark for another evening of fun, family-friendly entertainment in the most unique setting in all of professional baseball.

Here, America’s favorite pastime meets both the beautiful beaches of the Grand Strand and the wonderful Midwestern tradition of the 2016 world-champion Chicago Cubs to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience for you, your family and your friends.

We take tremendous pride when our fan experience is recognized nationally. Our ballpark experience has been ranked amongst the Top Stadium Experiences in all of sports by Stadium Journey Magazine, and was recently named the #1 Minor League Baseball Experience. Pelicans Ballpark also received numerous TripAdvisor.Com Certificates of Excellence. These honors are incredibly humbling and reaffirm why all of us with the Pelicans understand that your fan experience is our top priority. It is also testament to you, the amazing fans who bring the stadium to life, filling it with energy and fun each year for the past two plus decades.

Fan Code of Conduct

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are committed to creating a family-friendly and welcoming environment at the ballpark for all guests. As part of that commitment, we have adopted this written policy addressing fan behavior. The policy includes a Fan Code of Conduct, which is fan-facing and describes how fans are expected to behave.

All Myrtle Beach Pelicans staff, including game-day staff, must receive a copy of this policy before working any games. In addition, all staff must receive annual training on this policy, the substance of the Fan Code of Conduct, and how to respond to prohibited fan behavior. All training will be documented.

A copy of the Fan Code of Conduct can be found at any entrance gate to the ballpark, at any guest services booth, on www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com, and in the official game program.

Fans will be notified before and during the game through public service announcements (“PSAs”) on the main video board that summarize the Fan Code of Conduct, the penalties for violation, and how to report prohibited behavior.

FAN CODE OF CONDUCT - Out of respect for fellow guests, players, coaches, and ballpark staff, all guests are prohibited from:

Trespassing on the playing field at any time;
Interfering with baseballs that are in play;
Throwing or tossing objects;
Using foul, obscene or derogatory language (see below) or gestures;
Misusing or overconsuming alcohol, including, underage consumption;
Behaving in a manner that is disruptive, unruly, or abusive;
Accessing areas of the ballpark without a proper ticket, pass, or credential;
Misusing tickets, passes, or credentials in any way; or
Bringing prohibited items (listed below) into the ballpark.

Furthermore, guests are required to wear shirts and shoes at all times, and guests appearing intoxicated will be ejected from the ballpark and turned over to the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Derogatory language is defined as offensive language concerning a person’s race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, or national origin, and anyone using such language is subject to automatic ejection from the ballpark.

Violations of the Fan Code of Conduct will not be tolerated and may lead to ejection from the ballpark, a ban on attending future games, or other consequences. Guests who are found to have used derogatory language will be ejected from the ballpark.

Guest may report a violation to the Fan Code of Conduct to any game day employee, front office employee, or at Guest Services which is located on the main concourse behind home plate.

PROHIBITED ITEMS - The following items are prohibited in the ballpark: beach balls, inflatables, glass bottles, fireworks, firearms or any other weapons, laser devices or pointers, skateboards, rollerblades, skate shoes, hover boards, toy guns or knives, sticks, clubs, unmanned aerial vehicles, aerosol cans, baseball bats, hard sided coolers, and containers larger than 16x16x8 inches.

BaseAble Event Hosted In Offseason

While there was no action on the field, Pelicans Ballpark stayed busy this offseason.

In February of this year, Pelicans Ballpark was able to host the first BaseAble event in South Carolina in partnership with Special Olympics South Carolina Area 16. BaseAble is an organization focused on creating an inclusive and encouraging environment for individuals with mental or physical disabilities to participate in the game we all love – baseball.

Athletes from South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey came to Pelicans Ballpark to participate. The event featured a morning clinic, lunch in the picnic area, and a demonstration game. Local high school baseball teams joined the Special Olympics coaches in running the clinic.

Team President, Ryan Moore, said this prior to the event, “We’re honored that Pelicans Ballpark will play host to the very first BaseAble event in South Carolina. We look forward to hosting the athletes and helping create a memorable experience for them and their families.”

The Pelicans were also able to offer our facilities for dinner in our luxury suites accompanied with a ballpark tour the night before the event.

We look forward to continue to serve the community this upcoming season and beyond. You can also help up give back to the local community by donating food items from an approved list to Backpack Buddies during any Friday night game. All items will help provide food for the hungry children of Horry County.

Notable Former Pelicans

Ian Happ (2016)

The Chicago Cubs’ first-round pick (ninth overall) in 2015, Happ maneuvered quickly through the organization to reach the major leagues in 2017. The former Cincinnati Bearcat made his presence felt immediately by launching a home run in his big league debut on May 13, 2017 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Happ finished eighth in the rookie of the year voting in 2017 after batting .253/.328/.514 with 24 homers and 68 RBIs in 115 games. He followed that up in 2018 by hitting .233/.353/.408 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs in 142 games, all while being the youngest position player on the Cubs’ roster.

The Pittsburgh native starred for Myrtle Beach in 2016, slashing .296/.410/.475 with 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 43 RBIs in 69 games before forcing a promotion to Double-A Tennessee. At the time of his promotion, Happ was leading the entire Class A-Advanced level with 48 walks while ranking third in on-base percentage (.410) and routh in both average (.296) and OPS (.885) In June of 2016, Happ posted a .361/.461/.607 line in 19 games.

Other former Pelicans of note include...

Freddie Freeman (2009)

A second-round draft pick in 2007, Freddie Freeman was always a highly touted prospect. His introduction to pro ball, however, was a rough one. The Braves newest 100-million dollar man hit just .268 and posted a .674 OPS in rookie ball in 2007.

That was the last time Freeman had any issues hitting professional pitching. Freeman was a mid-season and postseason South Atlantic All-Star in 2008 with Low-A Rome. He went on to crush Carolina League pitching in 2009 with the Pelicans.He led Myrtle Beach in batting average (.302) and clubbed 19 doubles and six home runs in just half a season before a promotion to Double-A.

On September 1, 2010, Freeman was a big leaguer at just 20 years old. He finished second in the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year voting.

In 2013, Freeman transformed from a good player to a great one. Earning his first National League All-Star selection, Freeman finished fifth in the NL MVP voting while setting career highs in batting average (.319) and RBIs (109). Freeman would make his next All-Star appearance in 2018 where he hit .309/.388/.505 on the year and led the National League in games played (162), hit (191) and doubles (44).

Kyle Hendricks (2012)

Across four minor league seasons, Kyle Hendricks pitched his way into the big leagues in 2014. Not overpowering and often overlooked, Hendricks was considered the secondary piece in a trade that sent Ryan Dempster to the Texas Rangers in 2012, yet he has out-performed fellow trade-mate, third baseman Christian Villanueva (who also played for the Pelicans in 2012).

Hendricks posted a 2.69 ERA in the Minor LEagues, including a 3.28 mark at Triple-A Iowa before getting promoted to Chicago. That was the beginning of a stellar second half in the majors. Hendricks went 7-2 with a 2.46 ERA across 13 starts while walking just 13 in 80.1 innings. The Dartmouth alum was the National League Rookie of the Month in August and finished seventh in the NL Rookie of the Year voting.

The California native followed up his loud rookie season with a strong campaign as the newest member of the Cubs’ full-time rotation in 2015. Hendricks went 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA over 32 starts, helping the Cubs reach the National League Championship Series by defeating the Cardinals in Game 2 of the NLDS.

He would one-up himself the following year. Hendricks led all of baseball with a sparkling 2.13 ERA while posting a 16-8 record and allowing 142 hits in 190.0 innings. The right-hander finished third in the NL Cy Young voting and helped the Cubs win their first World Series in 108 year, starting the decisive Game 7.

Hendricks’ success should come as no surprise to Pelicans fans. The Californian dominated Carolina League teams in 2012. Before departing in the trade, he logged 130.2 innings in Myrtle Beach with nearly a 10-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio, hurled two complete games and tossed a shutout frame in the 2012 California/Carolina League All-Star Game in Winston-Salem. His 2.82 ERA from that season is good for 10th on the franchise’s career record list.

Joey Gallo (2014)

The Texas Rangers first-round pick (39th overall) in 2012, Gallo quickly rose through the Rangers farm system putting up monstrous home run totals in the process before making his debut with the big club in 2015.

Gallo’s 2014 stint in Myrtle Beach was a short one but it was impactful. The Las Vegas native blistered 21 homers in just 58 games with the Pelicans while hitting .323/.463/.735. He was named the Carolina League Most Valuable Player despite only spending half the season in the Grand Strand. Gallo was promoted to Double-A Frisco midway through the year and the power continued. Gallo blasted 21 more homers for the RoughRiders bringing his season total to 42 which was second to Kris Bryant (43) in all of Minor League Baseball.

Gallo made his major league debut on June 2, 2015 for the Rangers and continued what he had done in the minors by going deep in his first two major league starts. After spending most of the 2016 season in Triple-A, Gallo has been an everyday player for the Rangers over the last two seasons and his finished top-five in the league in homeruns both years hitting 41 in 2017 and 40 in 2018.

Gleyber Torres (2015-16)

Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013 by the Chicago Cubs, Gleyber Torres immediately became on of the Cubs top prospects. At just 17 years old, Torres made his debut for the Arizona Cubs in 2014 and hit .279/.372/.377 and was promoted to Boise for the final seven games of the year and went 11 for 28 with an OPS of 1,255.

Torres broke camp in 2015 with the South Bend Cubs and dominated the league hitting .293/.353/.386 and was named to the Midwest League All-Star Team and was named the League’s Prospect of the Year. He was promoted to Myrtle Beach on September 2, 2015 and finished the year with the Birds helping them to the 2015 Carolina League title.

Torres opened 2016 as the Chicago Cubs No. 1 overall prospect, according to Baseball America, and he did not disappoint. The 19-year-old hit .275 with nine homers and 47 RBI in 94 games for the Pelicans before being traded to the Yankees in a deal that brought Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs.

On April 22, 2018, Torres made his major league debut with the Yankees and went on to have an outstanding rookie campaign. He hit .271/.340/.480 with 24 homers and 77 RBIs. He was named an American League All-Star as the third youngest player in the league and went on to finish third in the AL Rookie of the Year voting.

David Bote (2016)

David Bote etched his name into Chicago Cubs history with his pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam on August 12th, 2018 but before skyrocketing to stardom on the mainstage, Bote made waves in the Carolina League with the Pelicans.

Originally the Chicago Cubs 18th round selection in the 2012 draft, Bote toiled his way through the Cubs system before breaking out with the Pelicans during the 2016 season. Bote became an instant fan favorite as he smashed Carolina League pitching to the tune of a .337/.410/.518 slash with six homers and 41 RBI.

After two more seasons of bouncing around the Cubs’ system, Bote made his major league debut on April 21, 2018 in a start against the Colorado Rockies. He finished his first year in the majors hitting .239/.319/.408 while hitting six homers and driving in 33 runs.

The 2025 season includes 21 post-game Fireworks Extravaganzas courtesy of Sparks Toyota. Dates include Opening Night, April 13, every Friday, and every Sunday from June 1 through August 10.

WET NOSE WEDNESDAY

Returning for the second straight year is Wet Nose Wednesdays presented by River Oaks Animal Hospital. Dog tickets to the Budweiser Bowtie Deck are only $5 with all proceeds benefiting charities and organizations that work with dogs.

NOCHE DE LOS PELÍCANOS DE MYRTLE BEACH

On a select number of games each season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans become los Pelícanos de Myrtle Beach. "Copa de la Diversión," or "Fun Cup," is a season-long event series created by MiLB and specifically designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with participating teams' local U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities. On April 27, June 11 , and July 27 of the 2025 season the Pelicans will become los Pelícanos de Myrtle Beach and wear special jerseys. Noche de los Pelícanos de Myrtle Beach is presented by El Patron 93.5.

Meet the "Squadron"

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans Opening Day roster is one to be excited about. The Pelicans opened on the road in Charleston, winning the season opener by a final score of 13-2. The Birds went on to sweep the RiverDogs in the three-game series, bringing their record to 3-0 to begin their home slate in 2025.

Quick Roster Facts:

The Opening Day roster consists of 30 players, 18 of which were born in the United States. California is the most represented state with five players hailing from The Golden State. There are also six players originally from the Dominican Republic, three from Venezuela and three from Cuba.

There are a few familiar faces to Myrtle Beach fans as the roster includes 16 players that had appeared in at least one game for the Pelicans prior to this season. Nazier Mule made 13 starts last season for the Birds, which was third most by any pitcher last season and leads all returners. In 2022 he was drafted by the Cubs in the 4th round and the 20-year-old is ready for his second season in Myrtle Beach. Other returning players include Owen Ayers, Cameron Sisneros, Jeral Vizcaino, Leonel Espinoza, Eriandys Ramon, Christopher Paciolla, Jose Escobar, Dilan Granadillo, Yenrri Rojas, JP Wheat, Anderson Suriel, Alfredo Romero, Will Frisch, Luis Martinez-Gomez and Mathew Peters.

The Pelicans will also welcome eight Cubs’ picks from the 2024 MLB Draft to the Grand Strand, including Cubs No. 15 ranked prospects, Cole Mathis. Of the eight 2024 draftees, four are pitchers and four are position players. Brooks Caple, Evan Aschenbeck, Hayden Frank and Brayden Risedorph make up the pitchers while the hitters include Mathis, Ayers, Sisneros and Matt Halbach.

Coaching Staff:

#15 - Manager, Yovanny Cuevas

Cuevas enters his first season as a manager and his third as a coach in the Cubs organization. The 27-year-old spent six seasons as a player in the Cubs organization.

#45 - Bench Coach, D’Angelo Jimenez

D’Angelo is back for his second year in Myrtle Beach and 7th with the Cubs. He logged eight years of major league service time with seven different franchises.

#28 - Hitting Coach, Roberto Vaz

Another returner, Vaz is back for his 3rd season with the Pelicans. He spent his seven-year playing career with the Oakland A’s and Texas Rangers organizations after being drafted in 1997.

#36 - Pitching Coach, Bruce Billings

Bruce is a familiar face as he is back in Myrtle Beach after serving as the pitching coach for High-A South Bend last season. He appeared on the mound for the Yankees, A’s and Rockies during his playing career.

#37 - Assistant Pitching Coach, JC Bonilla

JC is in his third season with the Cubs organization. He spent each of the last two seasons as the pitching coach for the Dominican Summer League Cubs in the Dominican Republic.

#6 - Developmental Coach, Kyle Sutherland

Originally from Seattle, Kyle attended junior college before transferring to VCU for two seasons. He served as the ACL Cubs bench coach last season and is our resident catching expert.

Athletic Trainer - Tanner Costine

Tanner is the Pelicans athletic trainer after serving in the same role for the Cubs in the Arizona Complex League over the last two seasons. He is originally from Raleigh, North Carolina and graduated from Eastern Carolina University before obtaining his masters degree at Liberty.

Strength Coach - Luis Gutierrez

This season will mark the first full season stateside for Luis after joining the DSL Cubs in 2023. He is a two-time graduate of the University of Arkansas, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Fayetteville.

Players:

#1 Jeral Vizcaino (RHP)

Jeral is a native of the Dominican Republic. The righty was one of five pitchers last season to appear in 25 or more games for the Pelicans. Pitched to a 2.82 ERA and held opponents to a .216 batting average.

#3 Leonel Espinoza (OF)

Leonel made his stateside debut with the Pelicans in 2023 and appeared in 59 games last season for the Birds, hitting .260 with 21 extra-base hits. Finished second on the team with five triples.

#5 Eriandys Ramon (INF)

Eriandys is another returner, playing in 27 games last season for Myrtle Beach. The switch hitter posted a .280 batting average across two levels last season.

#7 Christopher Paciolla (INF)

Christopher is a familiar face around Pelicans Ballpark as the former 3rd round pick by the Cubs played in 66 games last season for the Birds. He was committed to play at UCLA before hearing his name called on draft night in 2022.

#8 Angel Cepeda (INF)

Cepeda is one of two top 30 prospects within the Cubs organization that will start the season here. The 17th ranked prospect in the organization is also the youngest player on the roster, having turned 19 in January. Angel grew up in New Jersey and scouts began taking interest in his talent when he was just 14 years old. He moved back to the Dominican Republic before signing with the Cubs in 2023.

#9 Jose Escobar (INF)

Originally from Venezuela, Jose joined the Pelicans in August of last season and played in 23 games. In those games he tallied four homers and 15 RBI.

#12 Brooks Caple (RHP)

Brooks will make professional debut this season with the Pelicans. Caple was 9th round selection in 2024 out of Lamar and also played at Stephen F Austin.

#13 Kevin Valdez (RHP)

Kevin appeared in 17 games (11 starts) for Myrtle Beach in 2023, but injury held him out in 2024. He is back and ready to go after posting a 3.46 ERA in his first season with the Pelicans.

#16 Hayden Frank (LHP)

Hayden will make his professional debut this season after signing with the Cubs in July of last year out of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. The lefty also did two stints in the Cape Cod Baseball League, the nation's premier summer collegiate league.

#17 Cole Mathis (INF)

Mathis is the 15th ranked prospect in the Cubs organization. He will make his minor league debut this season with the Pelicans after being drafted 54th overall by the Cubs out of the College of Charleston last season.

#19 Michael Carico (Catcher)

Appeared in three games for the Pelicans in 2023, homering in one of those games. The former 5th round pick is originally from Winston-Salem and spent last season on the injured list, playing in three games for the ACL Cubs.

#20 Owen Ayers (Catcher)

Owen is a 2024 Cubs’ draftee and made his Pelicans’ debut in August last season.The switch hitting catcher logged hits in each of his first seven games here last season.

#21 Charlie Hurley (RHP)

Charlie is the tallest player on the roster, standing at 6 foot 8. He split his time in college between USC and Texas before signing with the Cubs in July of last year.

#22 Matt Halbach (INF)

Matt was the Cubs 10th round selection in last year's draft after playing three seasons in college at UC San Diego. He considered playing basketball in college, but elected to play baseball.

#24 Dilan Granadillo (Catcher)

Dilan is a left handed hitting catcher originally from Venezuela and signed with the organization back in 2019. He split last season between Myrtle Beach and High-A South Bend.

#25 Alexey Lumpuy Fernandez (OF)

Alexey is a 21-year-old outfielder from Cuba and has spent each of the last two seasons in the Dominican Summer league. He participated in the Cubs Spring breakout game at the end of spring training.

#27 Yoendris Gonzalez (RHP)

Yoendris signed with the Cubs in 2022 and appeared that same season in the DSL. Last season he pitched in the Arizona Complex League, but had his season cut short due to injury.

#30 Yenrri Rojas (RHP)

Yenrri made 17 appearances (7 starts) for the Pelicans last season, pitching his way to a 3.16 ERA. The righty signed with the Cubs in 2021 out of the Dominican Republic.

#32 Nazier Mulé

Nazier made 13 starts last season for the Pelicans (3rd most). Naz was a two-way player in high school, but became an internet sensation when he hit 100mph on the mound at just 16 years old. In 2022 he was drafted by the Cubs in the 4th round and the 20-year-old is ready for his second season in Myrtle Beach.

#33 JP Wheat (RHP)

JP hails from Bronxville, New York, but attended high school in Alabama. The righty made 10 starts for the Pelicans last season. He was a 2022 selection by the Chicago Cubs.

#35 Anderson Suriel (OF)

Anderson was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2019. He made his debut with the Pelicans last season, appearing in 17 games. He ended the 2024 campaign with a 3-for-3 night that featured a double, homer and a pair of RBI.

#38 Brayden Risedorph (RHP)

Brayden is a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana and was selected by the Cubs last season after playing his college baseball for the Hoosiers. This season will mark his professional debut.

#41 Alfredo Romero (RHP)

Signed in 2022 and split time between the DSL and ACL before pitching in 13 games (10 starts) for the Pelicans last season.

#44 Cameron Sisneros (INF)

Cameron was drafted out of East Tennessee State in last year's draft. The Denver native played in 13 games for the Pelicans to end the year, homering three times.

#47 Will Frisch (RHP)

A 2022 6th round pick out of Oregon State, Will split his time last season between the Arizona Complex League and the Pelicans. He made two starts here last season.

#48 Evan Aschenbeck (LHP)

Evan is a native of Bryan, Texas and played his college baseball for the Texas A&M Aggies before hearing his name called in the 13th round of last year's draft. He will make his professional debut this season.

#49 Cole Reynolds (LHP)

Cole was a two-way player at Elon, playing first base and pitching. He transferred to UNC Charlotte to finish his collegiate career and signed with the Cubs this January.

#51 Luis Martinez-Gomez (RHP)

Luis is originally from California, but attended Temple Junior College in Texas before being drafted in the 10th round in 2023. He pitched in three games last season for the Pelicans, tossing 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball.

#54 Mathew Peters (RHP)

Matt was drafted in the 12th round of 2022 by the Cubs out of Ivy Tech Fort Wayne. He joined the Pelicans last August, appearing in five games.

#55 Brayden Spears (RHP)

Brayden signed with the Cubs in February of this year. He played his college baseball at Boise State, Oregon and Cal State Fullerton. The righty spent the last three seasons playing Indy ball with the Boise Hawks of the Pioneer League.
