Flying Through The Second Half: How The Myrtle Beach Pelicans Clinched a Playoff Spot

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, emerging from a last-place finish in the first half of the 2025 Carolina League season, orchestrated a stunning reversal in the second half, clinching the South Division title with nine games remaining on August 28, 2025, at Fayetteville with a 7-0 shutout powered by Edwardo Melendez. This triumph secured their first playoff appearance since 2023, driven by prolonged winning streaks, explosive offensive outbursts, stout pitching, and clutch walk-off victories. With a 40-16 record through the clinch, the Pelicans led the league in key statistical categories, showcased dramatic player improvements, and delivered historic moments that defined their resurgence. Below is a recap of their second-half journey, highlighting trends, pivotal performances, and memorable walk-offs.

A Stretch of Streaks and Consistency

The Pelicans’ second half was defined by sustained excellence, with multiple winning streaks and dominant stretches. They kicked off with a five-game winning streak from June 20-25, sweeping Fayetteville and taking two at Columbia, including a 12-1 rout on June 24 and a 3-0 shutout on June 25. This early surge set a tone of consistency, as they posted a 14-11 record in June, a marked improvement from their 10-17 mark in June 2024. July was even stronger, with a 16-7 record—the best monthly mark of the season—fueled by a six-game winning streak from July 1-12, including a sweep at Charleston. August saw the Pelicans go 17-7 through the clinch, highlighted by their fourth five-game winning streak of the second half, with five wins against Charleston, including a 13-12 thriller on August 24th at Pelicans Ballpark.

Offensively, the Pelicans were a juggernaut, leading the league with a .258 batting average and 319 runs scored. Their bats erupted in games like the 19-1 rout at Charleston on August 2 and the 14-2 blowout against Augusta on July 20. Pitching was equally impressive, with a staff that posted a league-low 2.67 ERA in the second half. Notable shutouts included a 3-0 no-hitter against Augusta on July 18 and a 7-0 clincher at Fayetteville. Relievers like Brayden Spears (1-0, 1.40 ERA, 5 saves) and Landon Ginn (4-2, 1.66 ERA) anchored a bullpen that closed out tight games in the second half, while starters Jostin Florentino (4-3, 1.96 ERA) and Ethan Flanagan (5-1, 2.16 ERA) delivered quality starts consistently.

Clutch Walk-Offs and Memorable Moments

The Pelicans’ second half was punctuated by thrilling walk-off victories that showcased their resilience. On June 23 against Fayetteville, tied 1-1 in the 10th, Ty Southisene, placed on second, sparked a rally. An intentional walk and an infield single loaded the bases, and Eli Lovich delivered his first career walk-off single for a 2-1 win. On July 25 against Columbia, trailing 5-4 in the 10th, Yahil Melendez was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Derik Alcantara’s walk-off single over the center fielder’s head secured a 6-5 victory. August 7 saw Christian Olivo belt a three-run walk-off homer in the eighth inning of a doubleheader’s second game against Fredericksburg, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 win. On August 21 against Charleston, a 5-2 lead evaporated, but Angel Cepeda’s double and Dilan Granadillo’s single tied it in the 10th, setting up Southisene’s walk-off fielder’s choice for an 8-7 win in 11 innings. The most dramatic came on August 24 against Charleston, a 13-12, 11-inning slugfest with a season-high 25 combined runs. A wild pitch allowed Yahil Melendez to score the walk-off run, capping a three-run frame.

Historic Feats and Individual Accolades

The Pelicans made history multiple times. On July 10 at Kannapolis, Alexey Lumpuy hit the franchise’s first cycle since 1999, going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and 4 runs in a 7-3 win, a small part of what earned him Carolina League Player of the Month for July. On July 18 against Augusta, Jostin Florentino (6.0 IP, 9 K) and Kevin Camacho (3.0 IP) combined for the fifth nine-inning no-hitter in franchise history, a 3-0 masterpiece, with Florentino named July’s Pitcher of the Month. Matt Halbach (July 28-August 3), Christian Olivo (August 11-17), and Angel Cepeda (August 18-24) earned Player of the Week honors, reflecting the team’s offensive depth.

Standout Performers

The Pelicans led the league in batting average (.258) and runs scored (319)while their pitching staff excelled in ERA and shutouts. Key players showed remarkable improvement from the first half:

  • Alexey Lumpuy: From a .145 average and .484 OPS to .263 and .783, with 5 HRs and 19 SBs, highlighted by his cycle.
  • Ty Southisene: Improved from .151 average and .479 OPS to .311 and .794, stealing 26 bases and scoring 48 runs.
  • Christian Olivo: Jumped from .174 average and .571 OPS to .293 and .815, with 20 SBs and a walk-off homer.
  • Angel Cepeda: Rose from .200 average and .629 OPS to .283 and .774, hitting 4 HRs and 7 doubles.
