Angel Cepeda: A Dominican Homecoming and a Roster Spot in Myrtle Beach

The crack of the bat echoes through Pelicans Ballpark, where Angel Cepeda, a 19-year-old shortstop with a lightning-quick swing, steps into the batter’s box. At 6-foot-1, with an athletic frame brimming with potential, the Chicago Cubs’ international free agent signee is a standout for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, ranked as the organization’s No. 17 prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Born in the Dominican Republic, raised in New Jersey, and returning to his homeland as a teenager to chase a baseball dream, Cepeda’s journey to the Pelicans is a story of bold ambition. His decision to move back to the Dominican Republic unlocked a $1 million contract with the Cubs and a fast track to professional baseball, setting the stage for his promising 2025 season.

Cepeda’s roots lie in the Dominican Republic, where baseball is a way of life. His family relocated to New Jersey when he was young, seeking new opportunities. In the Garden State, Cepeda’s talent shone early. By 14, he was dazzling at showcases, his bat speed and athleticism catching the eye of college recruiters and scouts. “Angel Cepeda was being looked at by college programs since before he was in high school,” wrote Stan on northsidebaseball.com, underscoring his precocious ability. But the MLB Draft posed a challenge for American prospects, with fierce competition and modest bonuses for later rounds. Cepeda made a pivotal choice: he returned to the Dominican Republic to pursue international free agency, where top prospects often secure lucrative deals and quicker paths to the pros.

The move meant leaving behind family, friends, school, and the comforts of New Jersey life. In the Dominican Republic, Cepeda dove into the island’s baseball culture, training at academies where prospects hone their craft under relentless heat. “Cepeda came in with a reputation for his athleticism,” noted northsidebaseball.com, highlighting his versatility as a shortstop capable of playing multiple infield positions. His dedication paid off in January 2023, when the Cubs signed him for $1 million, making him a centerpiece of their international class, ranked No. 19 among 2023 international prospects by MLB.com. “The 17-year-old is a straight-up athlete through and through both offensively and defensively,” wrote On Tap Sports Net, praising his potential as a 20-20 hitter with above-average power.

Cepeda’s professional debut came in the Dominican Summer League (DSL) in 2023 with the DSL Cubs Red. Over 30 games, he posted an impressive .286/.427/.429 slash line, hitting one home run and driving in 14 RBIs. His plate discipline was exceptional, with a 15.4% walk rate, earning him DSL All-Star honors, per Baseball America. His ability to use the entire field stood out—38% of his hits went to right field, 35.4% were pulled, and 26.2% went to center, per northsidebaseball.com. The Cubs, recognizing his potential, promoted him to the Arizona Complex League (ACL) in 2024, a significant step toward full-season ball.

In the ACL, Cepeda excelled. Across 56 games, he batted .298/.383/.438, smashing three home runs, driving in 25 RBIs, and stealing 21 bases, ranking among the ACL Cubs’ offensive leaders. “He has a quick, compact swing that can spray the ball to all fields,” wrote Bleed Cubbie Blue, noting his 11.3% walk rate over 240 plate appearances. His raw power showed through with a 102.2 mph 90th percentile exit velocity and a 108.8 mph max exit velocity, per Baseball America, signaling a bright future as he matures physically. Defensively, he showcased versatility, splitting time between shortstop and second base, with the flexibility to handle third base if needed

By April of this year, Cepeda earned a spot on the Pelicans’ Opening Day roster, joining fellow top-30 prospect Cole Mathis under new manager Yovanny Cuevas, a former Cubs minor leaguer. “Cepeda slots into the 17th spot in the prospect rankings and is also the youngest player on the roster, having turned 19 in January,” reported MiLB.com. His promotion to Single-A is a milestone, marking his first year in full-season professional baseball. “Cepeda should start the season in Myrtle Beach this spring,” wrote Bleed Cubbie Blue. “He’s certainly a candidate for a breakout season and a quick rise up the rankings next year.” At Pelicans Ballpark, his athleticism and offensive prowess make him a fan favorite, with a ceiling as a middle-of-the-order hitter. “Cepeda has the makeup of another right-handed, middle-of-the-order hitter who can use the whole field,” wrote On Tap Sports Net.

Cepeda’s journey reflects his dual identity—Dominican by birth, American by upbringing. His return to the Dominican Republic was more than a strategic move; it was a reconnection with his heritage, a bold step to seize his destiny. Now, in Myrtle Beach, he’s adapting to the grind of full-season ball, his quick swing and disciplined approach turning heads. With every at-bat, Cepeda proves his $1 million signing was a steal, his path from New Jersey to the Dominican and back to the U.S. a testament to courage and talent. As he sprays line drives at Pelicans Ballpark, the 19-year-old is one swing closer to Wrigley Field, carrying the hopes of two homes in every plate appearance.
