Pelicans take advantage of Woodies' miscues to capture series opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (June 1, 2018) - Three unearned runs in the sixth inning propelled the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 4-1 win over the Down East Wood Ducks on Friday night from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. 
With the game knotted at 1-1 in the sixth, the Pelicans (25-29) took the lead thanks to two errors from the Wood Ducks (30-24). Andruw Monasterio crossed the plate on a throwing error by shortstop Anderson Tejeda to give the Pelicans the lead before Brendon Davis, the third baseman, threw a ball away passed second base to allow Aramis Ademan to score another run. Austin Upshaw then laced a single into right field to make it 4-1 Pelicans. 

Matt Swarmer (5-2) earned the win with his six innings, only ceding a run on two hits while striking out six and walking one. Tyler Peyton tossed a scoreless ninth inning to record his fifth save on the season. 
After the Pelicans took an early lead on a Connor Myers RBI double in the second inning, the Woodies tied the game in the fifth when Matt Whatley went deep for a solo homer. 
Walker Weickel (1-4) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, while striking out four and walking two. 
The Pelicans take on the Down East Wood Ducks in the second game of a three-game set on Saturday for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Birds will send RHP Keegan Thompson  (2-3, 3.61 ERA) to the hill while the Woodies will counter with RHP Steven Bruce (1-0, 1.54 ERA). Television coverage begins on the CW21 and MiLB.tv at 6:00 p.m. while radio coverage begins at 5:50 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
On Saturday, Cubs-A-Palooza continues at the ballpark as seven-time All-Star Lee Smith will be on hand to sign autographs and the first 1,000 fans will receive a Cubs photo baseball.
