Woodbridge, VA-To wrap up potentially the final home game at Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium in franchise history, the Potomac Nationals (65-67, 35-30) came from behind in a 5-1 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (54-79, 33-33). 1B Aldrem Corredor hit a towering three-run home run to right field in the fifth inning off of RHP Tyler Peyton, which gave Potomac a 4-1 lead and proved to be the game-winning hit. LHP Carson Teel (W, 7-3) tossed his fourth consecutive quality start for Potomac, as the left-handed starter allowed just one run over six innings. Teel is 2-1 with a 0.87 ERA over his last five starts.
The Potomac starter gave up a first pitch single to CF D.J. Artis to begin the game, but faced the minimum in the inning with a pickoff at first base. In the second frame, 1B Luke Reynolds drew a one out walk, while 2B Jhonny Bethancourt and RF Kevonte Mitchell connected with consecutive singles. Mitchell's single plated Artis and gave Myrtle Beach a 1-0 lead. Teel retired the final two hitters that he faced in the inning and faced just two over the minimum over the next three innings on his way to another quality effort.
Potomac threatened in each of the first three frames against RHP Enrique De Los Rios (L, 1-3) but failed to capitalize on five baserunners over that stretch. De Los Rios worked a perfect fourth inning before a defensive blunder kickstarted Potomac's rally in the fifth.
The Red, White, & Blue finally got on the board with a four-run fifth inning against De Los Rios and RHP Tyler Peyton. With one out in the frame, SS Delvin Zinn sailed a throw to first base on a groundout by 2B Osvaldo Abreu . The E6 preceded a single from SS Gilbert Lara . Myrtle Beach turned to the bullpen and brought in Peyton who walked LF Jack Sundberg on four pitches. CF Cole Freeman tied the game on a fielder's choice groundout, while Corredor followed with a monstrous three-run home run to right field. Corredor's home run left the bat at 109 MPH and carried an estimated 350 feet. The first baseman's ninth home run of the season gave Potomac a 4-1 lead. Potomac added a run on an RBI double from Freeman in the seventh inning, which made it 5-1, the eventual final.
After six strong innings from Teel, Potomac turned to the bullpen. RHP Jorge Pantoja faced seven batters over two perfect innings while LHP Hayden Howard was one pitch away from bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but got LF Zac Taylor to foul out to C Jakson Reetz , which ended the ballgame and secured Potomac's 5-1 win.
With the victory, Potomac stayed within 2.5 games of the Salem Red Sox for a potential playoff berth, as the Red Sox picked up a 1-0 shutout win on Thursday night. Both teams will face off with last place teams for the final series of the regular season. Potomac will play five games over the next four days in Frederick, MD against the Frederick Keys, while the Red Sox will host the team at the bottom of the Southern Division for four games, the Carolina Mudcats.
First pitch at Nymeo Field in Frederick on Friday night is set for 7:00pm. The Potomac broadcast will get underway at 6:45pm with the P-Nats Leadoff Show. You can listen to the Potomac broadcast at potomacnationals.com or on the TuneIn Radio App.
