BOX SCORE | BOW 10, REA 11 (11 INNINGS)

Jhailyn Ortiz hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eleventh inning to send the Reading Fightin Phils home in celebration as they defeated the Bowie Baysox 11-10 at home on Friday.

Ortiz went 3-6 in the contest, hitting a home run in the sixth inning. Ali Castillo and Aldrem Corredor also collected three hits against the Baysox while Jack Conley tallied his second home run of the season and his second-straight multi-hit game.

The Baysox scored the first run of the contest in the first inning but Reading took a 2-1 lead when Conley hit a two-run shot to left field.

Bowie scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning while adding another in the sixth to make the score 6-2 but the Fightins answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Ortiz led off the inning with a solo home run to left field. After Corredor got on base with a single, Josh Ockimey hit a two-run home run to cut the deficit to one.

Once again, Bowie answered with two runs to retake the lead in the top of the seventh. A series of four-straight singles fueled a three-run bottom of the seventh inning as the R-Phils knotted the game at eight runs apiece. Ortiz collected his second RBI of the game when Simon Muzziotti crossed home plate on the right fielder’s single. Corredor followed with an RBI single of his own to plate Muzziotti and Ockimey recorded an RBI groundout to score the tying run.

Reading’s pitching staff held the Baysox scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings but couldn’t create a run of its own so the game went into extra innings.

The teams exchanged runs in the tenth inning and Bowie took another lead in the top of the eleventh inning. The Fightins went to bat looking to end the game and they did just that. Freylin Minyety, the placed runner, moved from second to third base on Castillo’s single. Minyety and Castillo scored to win the game when Ortiz singled to center field.

Jack Perkins started the contest on the mound for Reading and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out five batters.

Austin Ross, Julian Garcia, Billy Sullivan and Ofriedy Gomez combined to pitch 6.1 innings. Garcia gave up three runs on four hits while Gomez gave up one run on two hits. McKinley Moore earned the win on Friday, pitching the top of the eleventh inning and giving up one run on one hit while tallying two strikeouts.

The Fightins will play at FirstEnergy Stadium next on Saturday, May 14 at 6:45 PM.
