Reading Tops Somerset 9-6 on Saturday Night

In an unconventional game that included a combined 20 walks between both the Reading Fightin Phils and the Somerset Patriots (Yankees), the Fightins prevailed and picked up a 9-6 win on Saturday.

Vito Friscia drew three walks and scored two runs. Wendell Rijo, Jack Conley and Kevin Vicuna each walked twice while AJ Graffanino had two hits and a walk.

The Patriots led early, but never again as they put up a run in the top of the first inning on Rodolfo Duran’s RBI single.

Reading took the lead in the bottom half. Johan Rojas led off with a double. Graffanino and Simon Muzziotti followed with a walk and single, respectively. A wild pitch allowed Rojas to score. Friscia walked to loaded the bases and two sacrifice flies from Aldrem Corredor and Rijo plated two runs.

The lead doubled in the bottom of the third inning. Muzziotti and Friscia drew back-to-back walks with one out. Rijo walked to load the bases, The fourth walk of the inning worked by Conley forced in a run. Vicuna batted in two more runs with a single. Conley attempted to score from first but was called out at the plate.

Somerset hit back-to-back solo home runs with one out in the following frame. After loading the bases on two singles and a walk, Duran was hit by a pitch to force in a run. The score stood at 6-4 in favor of the R-Phils after four innings.

The Patriots tacked on another run in the top of the seventh thanks to two singles.

In the bottom half, Graffanino reached on a single then Friscia and Corredor both walked to load the bases. Rijo and Conley each walked to force in a run. Vicuna was hit by a pitch, which pushed another run across the plate, making the score 9-5.

Anthony Volpe led off the top of the eighth inning with a solo homer but that would be the final run of the game on either side.

Bubby Rossman started on the mound for the Fightins and pitched one inning. He gave up one run on one hit along with three walks.

Jack Perkins pitched the next 2.2 innings and earned the win. He allowed three runs on five hits while striking out three.

Mike Adams came on to get the final out of the fourth inning. He pitched 1.1 innings and didn’t allow a hit or run.

Matt Seelinger pitched the next 1.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits.

Tyler McKay gave up one run on two hits through the next 1.1 innings.

JoJo Romero made his second appearance in Reading as part of an MLB rehab assignment. He picked up his second save in as many games by inducing a double-play and getting a strikeout to end the game.

The Fightins will play at FirstEnergy Stadium next on July 3 at 6:45 PM.
