The Rochester Red Wings edged the Toledo Mud Hens 4-3 Saturday night at Frontier Field. The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m., where kids will have the chance to run the bases with Spikes and Mittsy following the game.

Both starting pitchers were effective early.  Toledo starter Buck Farmer kept the Red Wings hitless through three innings, as Rochester starter David Hurlbut matched him with three scoreless innings of his own.
Rochester scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kennys Vargas hit a ground ball to second base that allowed Matt Hague to score from third after he doubled and advanced on a wild pitch. The RBI groundout gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.
After Niko Goodrum hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on an error, Leonardo Reginatto contributed an RBI single to extend the Red Wings lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
An RBI single cut the Mud Hens' deficit to one in the top of the seventh inning and made it a 2-1 ballgame.
The score became 3-1 Rochester in the bottom of the seventh inning when a Reginatto hit scored Goodrum for a second time in the game. After a John Ryan Murphy single put runners on first and second, Edgar Corcino contributed an RBI hit of his own, stretching the Red Wings lead to three.
Farmer was replaced following the Murphy single after throwing 6.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned earns on six hits, one walk and four strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches - 59 for strikes.
Alex Wimmers came in to relieve Hurlbut to begin the top of the eighth inning. Hurlbut threw 7.0 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits, no walks and four strikeouts. He threw 90 pitches - 65 for strikes.
Wimmers ran into trouble in the top of the eighth inning after a leadoff walk and RBI single cut the Rochester lead back to 4-2. Murphy threw out a runner on a steal attempt, and Wimmers got a strikeout to end the rally attempt.
John Curtiss worked the ninth for the Red Wings, allowing a two-out single that made the score 4-3.

THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
1933 - The Red Wings and Maple Leafs each took a victory in a doubleheader in Toronto. Rochester took the first loss 6-4, and Toronto took the second loss 4-2.
1988 - Pitcher Mark Bowden allowed one run and struck out 12 in 8.2 to gain his eighth victory of the season and lead Rochester to a 3-1 victory over Columbus at Silver Stadium. The win extended the Wings' lead over the Clippers for first place in the IL west to 3 games.

2005 - Good pitching and big hitting led the way as the Rochester Red Wings won the opener 8-2 over the Durham Bulls Friday night at Frontier Field. Terry Tiffee put the game out of reach in the first inning with a three-run double. Henry Bonilla pitched a quality game as well. The Wings offense stayed hot, and attacked Durham starter Chris Seddon (2-6) early. The Wings scored 5 runs and sent 6 batters to the plate before the first out in the first inning. Chris Heintz and Rob Bowen each had RBI singles in the first, and Tiffee provided the big blow, with a bases-loaded, bases clearing double, scoring 3 more, making it 5-0 and seemingly out of reach.
THIS DAY IN INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE HISTORY
2000 - In its fifth season, Victory Field in Indianapolis sets its single-game attendance record during a Saturday matchup against the Columbus Clippers, but the historic crowd of 16,168 is not sent home happy on this night. Despite a home run from star outfielder Lyle Mouton, the Indians fall 8-5 to their division rivals from Columbus. It would, however, be the Tribe fans that would get the last laugh in 2000, as Indianapolis went on to win the IL West and ultimately the Governors' Cup Championship.

1967 - The Atlanta Braves used a Major League record five pitchers in the ninth inning of a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The pitchers were Ken Johnson, Ramon Hernandez, Claude Raymond, Dick Kelley and Cecil Upshaw.
2000 - Seattle's 13-5 win over Texas was interrupted for fifty-four minutes when a rainstorm drenched fans at Safeco Field and the $518 million stadium's roof wouldn't close because of a computer problem. The roof finally began closing about twenty minutes later.
