As the end of the Minor League Baseball season creeps closer, announcements of which top prospects will be competing in the Arizona Fall League have started to trickle in.
While the rosters are still a few weeks away from being finalized, the AFL released the 2024 schedule on Wednesday, signaling fall baseball in the desert is right around the corner.
The campaign starts with Opening Night on Oct. 7, as the Surprise Saguaros take on the Mesa Solar Sox, kicking off the regular season, which concludes with the Play-in Semifinal on Nov. 15 and the Championship on Nov. 16.
Every autumn as the leaves change, each Major League Team sends seven of its top prospects to compete at baseball’s finishing school. Those players combine to form the six AFL teams, each aligned with five MLB clubs. This year’s assignments are:
Glendale Desert Dogs: Cardinals, Dodgers, Phillies, Reds, White Sox
Mesa Solar Sox: Angels, Athletics, Cubs, Rays, Red Sox
Peoria Javelinas: Braves, Brewers, Mariners, Marlins, Padres
Salt River Rafters: D-backs, Nationals, Rockies, Twins, Yankees
Scottsdale Scorpions: Blue Jays, Giants, Mets, Pirates, Tigers
Surprise Saguaros: Astros, Guardians, Orioles, Rangers, Royals
In addition to the regular season games that are held at Cactus League Spring Training facilities, there are several special events that will be held throughout the 30-game season. On Oct. 19, there will be a tripleheader held at Goodyear Park, spring home of the Guardians and Reds. The day will start with a matinee showdown between the Rafters and Desert Dogs, followed by Scorpions vs. Saguaros and concluding with an evening matchup between the Solar Sox and Javelinas.
The next week, on Oct. 25, the Solar Sox and Javelinas will clash at Grand Canyon University's Brazell Field, and on Oct. 26, there will be a doubleheader at American Family Fields of Phoenix, the Spring Training park of the Brewers.
Closing out the special events are the festivities of Fall-Stars weekend. On Nov. 8, prospects will compete in a Home Run Derby – last year's contest was won by Kala’i Rosario (MIN No. 21) -- and on Nov. 9, they will compete in the Fall-Stars Game. Both events will be held at Sloan Park, the Cubs' Spring Training field.
Entering its 32nd season, the Arizona Fall League has produced hundreds of big league All-Stars, over 20 MVPs, dozens of Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Award winners and more.
