Bombarded by base hits

Hooks even series with 12-hit effort
June 20, 2014

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (JUNE 20, 2014) - A barrage of single-base knocks bolstered the Corpus Christi Hooks to a 4-1 victory over the Frisco RoughRiders on Friday night at Whataburger Field.

With the loss, Frisco (1-2; 41-31) has lost four of its last five games and is 3-6 on the current 12-game road trip.

Corpus Christi (1-3; 35-39) snaps a four-game skid and picks up its first win of the second half.

Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (1-2) has dropped his last two starts with the RoughRiders. The Hooks nickled and dimed the righty throughout his 4 1/3 innings pitched. Gonzalez allowed a hit in every frame and 12 in total along with four runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Hooks did not register an extra-base hit against Gonzalez, but instead displayed an uncanny tendency to find holes in the RoughRiders' infield for a stream of bloopers and bleeders.

Brady Rodgers (2-9) found his long-awaited second win of the season and lasted five innings with one run on four hits, one walk and four strikeouts. The right-hander had lost his previous eight decisions and picked up his first victory since April 21.

David Rollins earned the save. The southpaw piggybacked off Rodgers' start and lasted the final four frames and surrendered three hits, no walks and struck out a half dozen men.

The RoughRiders struck first in the second inning when Joey Gallo lashed a hanging breaking ball over the center field wall for a solo home run. The blast gives Gallo 26 for the season, the most in the minors, and five at the Double-A level. It was the prospect's first home run since June 13.

The 1-0 lead stood until the third inning. With one out and two on, Carlos Perdomo knocked the Hooks' second infield single of the frame and tied the game at one run apiece.

Corpus Christi jumped in front soon thereafter when Jio Mier skied a sacrifice fly to right field. Drew Robinson unleashed an on-target throw to catcher Tomás Telis but Hooks' runner Jonathan Meyer craftily avoided the tag to give his team its first lead of the night.

The Hooks' hit parade marched along in the fourth as another infield base hit-this one from Ruben Sosa-tallied a run and Meyer's third single of the ballgame pushed Corpus Christi's edge to 4-1.

Frisco's series with Corpus Christi continues on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. CDT from Whataburger Field. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on www.ridersbaseball.com with the Frisco RoughRiders Pregame Show.
