Round Rock Express (27-18) RHP Cy Sneed stole the show in a 4-0 E-Train win over the San Antonio Missions (27-19) on Wednesday night at Dell Diamond. Sneed (2-5, 4.97) carried a perfect game into the eighth inning, when Missions 2B Cory Spangenberg collected a one-out double to snap a streak of 22 straight batters retired.
Sneed needed just 78 pitches to cruise through the first seven innings, striking out five Missions hitters along the way. After Sneed enticed San Antonio CF Tyrone Taylor into a flyout to begin the eighth inning, Spangenberg lined a 2-1 pitch down the left field line for a double to break up the perfect game bid.
Offensively, the Express bats picked up their starter early, as CF Derek Fisher notched a single with one out in the bottom of the first inning before LF Yordan Alvarez shot a two-run, opposite-field missile, his team-leading 19th of the season, to give the Express a 2-0 advantage.
The next inning, DH AJ Reed and 1B Taylor Jones teamed up for back-to-back longballs, each coming on the first pitch of their respective at-bats to double the Round Rock lead to 4-0.
With a 4-0 lead in tow, Sneed needed just 88 total pitches to retire 24 of the 25 batters he faced to pick up his second win of the season. The righty only threw three balls in an at-bat twice in 25 total batters faced. On the night, 62 of his 88 pitches were strikes. On the losing side, San Antonio RHP Bubba Derby (0-3, 5.19) allowed four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Express look to win this installment of the I-35 Rivalry Series on Thursday night. Round Rock RHP Forrest Whitley (0-2, 10.48) is slated to start against a San Antonio pitcher to be announced. First pitch at Dell Diamond is set for 7:05 p.m.
