ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (49-59) bats remained hot in a 7-3 win over the El Paso Chihuahuas (52-56) on Sunday night at Dell Diamond. C A.J. Jimenez blasted his fifth home run of the year to help fuel the victory.
E-Train reliever LHP Adam Loewen (6-0, 4.56) picked up the win after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. El Paso starter RHP Kyle Lloyd (0-2, 6.25) suffered the loss after giving up five runs, only four of which were earned, on seven hits and four walks in three innings of work.
Express starter RHP Anthony Bass returned from a 46-day stint on the disabled list to allow just two runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. The righty struck out five and walked just one. El Paso plated a pair of runs off Bass in the top of the first inning. 1B Chase d'Arnaud collected a one-out single before LF Nick Buss followed up with an RBI double. Two hitters later, DH Ryan Schimpf singled to extend his team's lead to 2-0.
Round Rock answered with a big inning in the third. RF Drew Stubbs and LF Travis Snider started the rally with back-to-back singles. 1B Ronald Guzmán and Jimenez then collected consecutive RBI singles to level the game at 2-2. SS Pete Kozma kept the hit train going with a double that scored Guzman to give the E-Train their first lead of the night. After 2B Doug Bernier worked a walk, 2B Luis Marté singled to score Jimenez. On the play, El Paso SS Diego Goris threw an errant relay to first base, allowing Kozma to race home, extending the gap to 5-2.
In the seventh, Jimenez sparked a two-out rally with a line drive home run off reliever LHP Keith Hessler . Kozma kept the inning alive with a single before Bernier split the gap in right-center field for an RBI double.
El Paso RF Collin Cowgill welcomed Round Rock closer RHP Preston Claiborne to the contest with a solo home run to left field, trimming the final score to 7-3.
The two Lone Star State rivals continue their series on Monday night. Express RHP Clayton Blackburn (4-2, 4.94) is set to take the mound against Chihuahuas RHP Michael Kelly (3-2, 5.86). First pitch at Dell Diamond is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
