Round Rock Express Edge Texas Rangers 4-3

March 31, 2011

Chad Tracy tied the game with a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, and Doug Deeds delivered the game-winning hit with a two-out RBI single later that inning as the Round Rock Express rallied past the Texas Rangers 4-3 in an exhibition game Wednesday night at The Dell Diamond.

It was the Rangers' final tune-up before opening the regular season Friday against the Boston Red Sox at The Ballpark in Arlington. Texas fielded its usual starting lineup, but most of the starters left the game after six innings. Starting pitcher Derek Holland allowed one run on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

Express starter Michael Kirkman was forced from the game with one out in the second after taking a Nelson Cruz line drive off his left (pitching) arm. He is listed as day-to-day with a forearm contusion; x-rays were not necessary. Zach Jackson spelled Kirkman and allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits and two walks with one strikeout over 5.2 innings.

Round Rock took the game's first lead as Craig Gentry walked with one out in the bottom of the first and later scored on Brad Nelson's two-out single.

The Rangers tied the game in the fourth on a two-out Cruz RBI single and took the lead in the fifth on Elvis Andrus' RBI triple. Round Rock tied the game on a Luis Cruz two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Rangers recaptured the lead in the top of the seventh on Mitch Moreland's RBI groundout.

Derek Hankins worked a perfect top of the eighth and was credited with the win. Darren O'Day, the third of the Rangers three relievers on the night, was saddled with the loss after pitching the bottom of the eighth.

Nelson Cruz went 2-for-3 and produced the Rangers' lone multiple-hit game. Nelson was 2-for-2, Deeds was 2-for-3 with a walk and Luis Cruz was 2-for-4.

Round Rock returns to action Sunday with an exhibition game against the Rangers Double-A affiliate Frisco RoughRiders. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. CDT at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.
