NORFOLK, PA (April 10) -The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders bested the Norfolk Tides 7-3 on Wednesday night. The bullpen combined for seven innings of shutout ball with 11 strikeouts. Josh VanMeter smashed his first home run of the season for the go-ahead runs.

Norfolk took an early lead plating a run in the first inning. Heston Kjerstad recorded his first hit of three on the day. Coby Mayo followed with a run scoring double.

The RailRiders countered quickly in the next frame. Luis Torrens led off with a walk and moved over on a base hit from Luis González. Jordan Groshans smacked an RBI single to tie things up at one. VanMeter sent in Gonzalez to put the team up 2-1.

The Tides followed back with a two-run inning. With the bases loaded, Peyton Burdick recorded a sacrifice fly to bring things up to 2-2. An infield single brought in another for a one run advantage.

SWB got after it again in the fourth. González led off with a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Groshans batted in another run to knot it up at three apiece.

The score held there until the eighth frame. Groshans singled for the third time in the contest to get aboard. VanMeter cranked his first homer of the season to break the tie and give SWB a two run lead.

Kevin Smith gave the RailRiders some insurance an inning later. After back-to-back walks were issued to put two on, Smith smoked a ground ball up the middle making it 7-3.

Phil Bickford, Oddanier Mosqueda, and Duane Underwood Jr (W, 1-0) combined for five shutout innings. They totaled eight strikeouts. Ron Marinaccio (S, 1) tossed the last two clean.

Baltimore’s #8 prospect Chayce McDermott tossed four and a third off three run ball. Nick Vespi had 2.2 allowing just one hit.

The RailRiders continue their series in Norfolk against the Triple-A Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The week continues with a game on Thursday at 12:05 PM.
