Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Mets split a doubleheader with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Wednesday at NBT Bank Stadium, falling 6-3 in game one before rebounding for a 13-2 victory in game two.
In the opener, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (30-28) broke through in the third inning. Duke Ellis singled and George Lombard Jr. was hit by a pitch before Spencer Jones delivered an RBI single. Later in the frame, Oswaldo Cabrera lifted a sacrifice fly and Seth Brown added an RBI single to give the RailRiders a 3-0 lead.
Syracuse (28-26) struggled to generate offense against Carlos Lagrange and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitching staff. The Mets managed just three hits through the first six innings and struck out 12 times.
The RailRiders added insurance in the seventh. Tyler Hardman and Seth Brown hit back-to-back home runs before Ernesto Martinez Jr. doubled home another run, stretching the lead to 6-0.
The Mets mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh. Cristian Pache was hit by a pitch before Ben Rortvedt launched a two-run homer to right-center field, his third home run of the season. Later in the inning, Matt Rudick lined an RBI single to score Nick Morabito and trim the deficit to 6-3, but Syracuse could get no closer.
Kodai Senga started for Syracuse in his second rehab outing. Senga worked 5.0 IP, allowed 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB and recorded 5 K. Danis Correa surrendered three runs in the seventh inning in relief.
In game two, Syracuse wasted no time jumping in front. Morabito singled, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by catcher Edinson Duran, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Mets broke the game open in the third. Matt Rudick walked and Jihwan Bae singled before Christian Arroyo ripped a two-run double to left field. Later in the inning, Andy Ibáñez added an RBI single, and a double steal by Yonny Hernández and Ryan Clifford brought home another run to make it 5-0.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got on the board in the fourth when Jonathan Ornelas hit a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
Syracuse put the game away with a seven-run sixth inning. Arroyo delivered a two-run single, Bae scored on a wild pitch, Ibáñez added a sacrifice fly, and Kevin Parada cleared the bases with a three-run double. Rudick followed with an RBI single to cap the outburst and extend the lead to 13-2.
On the mound, Zach Peek opened the game with two scoreless innings before Matt Turner, Daniel Duarte, Nate Lavender, and Jonathan Pintaro combined to allow just two runs over the final five innings.
Arroyo paced the offense in game two, finishing with a double, three hits, and four RBIs. Parada drove in three runs, while Rudick collected three hits and scored three times. Bae reached base three times and scored three runs in the victory.
Syracuse continues its six-game series against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
