The Toledo Mud Hens were defeated by the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday night at Innovative Field by a score of 2-0.

Devin Sweet got the start for the Mud Huns as he comes into the day 0-1 on the year looking to rebound.

Justyn-Henry Malloy got things started for the Hens offense as he singled on a ground ball to shortstop. Jace Jung then drew a walk which put runners on a first and second. A wild pitch allowed them both to move up 90 feet. But to no avail as a few strikeouts later ended the inning.

The bottom of the first saw Sweet give up a walk and a single but was able to get out of the inning as Sweet tripped on the mound as he was throwing which saw the runners try and advance, but Dillon Dingler was able to throw out the runner at third.

A scoreless top half of the second led to the bottom half where we again saw Sweet give up a few walks but again the defense helped him out as Justice Bigbie made a diving catch to end the inning and save a few runs from scoring.

In the bottom of the third, Sweet gave up a lead-off triple but was able to record two quick outs. However, the next batter he gave up a two-run home run which gave the Red Wings the 2-0 lead and also ended Sweet’s day. Mason Englert replaced him on the mound and was able to end the inning with a strikeout.

A scoreless inning and a half saw Engert be replaced on the mound by Andrew Vasquez in the bottom of the fifth. Vasquez then gave up a walk and a single which put runners on the corners but was able to get out of the inning with a groundout to end the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Bigbie and Keston Hiura were able to get abroad with singles but weren’t able to get driven home as a strikeout ended the inning.

Trey Wingenter then replaced Vasquez in the bottom of the sixth as he gave up a walk and a single which had a bunt move them up a base, but Wintgenter was able to get out of the jam with two straight strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh, Buddy Kennedy and Andrew Navigato reached on a single and a walk but weren’t able to be brought home as a double play ended the inning.

Drew Anderson replaced Wingenter on the mound in the bottom of the eighth. Anderson gave up a quick walk and single but was able to pitch out of the jam as he struck out the final two batters in the inning to send the game into the ninth.

In the top of the ninth, the Hens weren’t able to pull together a rally as they went 1-2-3 to end the ballgame in favor of the Red Wings 2-0.

The Hens and Red Wings continue their six-game series tomorrow morning with the first pitch set to be at 11:05 a.m.
