MUD HENS NOTES

How Sweep It Is: The Toledo Mud Hens completed their first series sweep of the season against the Omaha Storm Chasers this week, and their first sweep since July 23-29 last year against Louisville, improving their record from 5-16 to 11-16 (9-6 record at home). They took the first game by a score of 9-8 as Riley Unroe recorded both the walk-off walk and the win on the mound. The Hens took game two of the series 8-4 as the offense surged late, scoring four unanswered runs in the 6th to 8th innings. They won Thursday’s game by a score of 4-3 on a Jahmai Jones walk-off single to score the winning run in the 9th. Friday’s game was postponed and rescheduled as a doubleheader on Saturday, which the Mud Hens swept both games of. They took the first game by a score of 3-1 and the second game by a score of 4-1. They finished out the series with a 2-0 win on Sunday, with Mud Hens pitchers stringing together a shutout and allowing three hits.

Riley Unroe, Two-Way Star: Riley Unroe had himself an unreal week. He has reached base in all 17 games he has appeared in this season, while also building a 10-game hit streak and a 7-game run-scoring streak during this span, all active as of April 28. Throughout his on-base streak, Unroe is 18-for-53 with 11 runs scored, three doubles, one home run, 10 runs batted in, 10 walks, and two stolen bases. In addition to the streaks, Unroe pitched three innings, the 11th, 12th, and 13th, allowing three unearned runs to keep the Mud Hens in the game. He became only the second player to pitch in a game and record an RBI since 2005 for the Mud Hens on Tuesday, joining Frank Schwindel (who hit a home run in a losing effort) on that list. The last player in the International League to pitch for the win and record the game-winning RBI was Laz Rivera for Charlotte on September 7th, 2023 against Durham. It seems as though this win built some momentum within the clubhouse, as the Mud Hens continued to pile on five more wins in a row against Omaha.

Wilkel Being Wilkel: RHP Wilkel Hernandez has continued to improve throughout the season, putting up his best start of the season on Thursday against Omaha. The righty threw for five innings, matching his season high, keeping the Storm Chasers scoreless and holding them to only two hits while striking out four batters, bringing his season total up to 22 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched. As his ERA continues to drop, Hernandez can become a threat to International League hitters.

Off to Worcester: The Mud Hens will travel to Worcester, MA for a six-game series against the Worcester Red Sox this week at Polar Park. The two teams last met for a six-game series August 27-September 1, 2024, where they split the series at 3 games each.
