The Wilmington Blue Rocks dropped game three of their six-game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones on Thursday, July 6 by a final score of 7-4.
The Cyclones got the scoring started immediately, plating three runs in the opening frame. First, with the bases loaded and two outs, Omar De Los Santos ripped a ground ball to shortstop Lucius Fox, and the 26-year-old tried going to second for the force out, but his throw was too late, which allowed Kevin Parada to score the first run of the game. In the very next at-bat, Cesar Berbesi took advantage of the extended inning and blooped a single into left field to make it a 3-0 game.
From that point on, the Blue Rocks began chipping away. In the bottom of the second, Jose Sanchez got Wilmington on the board with an RBI single that scored Jared McKenzie. Then, in the bottom of the third, Nick Shumpert blasted his second home run of the year to deep left field, which cut the deficit to just one, 3-2.
The Cyclones were able to tack on an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a William Lugo sacrifice fly, but the Blue Rocks continued to battle. Down 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Viandel Pena stepped in the box as a pinch-hitter for Shumpert and ripped a bases-loaded, two-RBI double into the right-center field gap. The Rocks were inches away from winning the game on the clutch hit, but T.J. White got thrown out at the plate and the two teams entered the tenth inning tied up at four.
In the top of the tenth, Brooklyn broke the game wide open. To kick things off, Chase Estep smoked a double into the right-center field gap to score William Lugo and give the Cyclones a 5-4 lead. D’Andre Smith followed suit, doubling into the left-center field gap to score Estep, and the inning was then capped off with a Rhylan Thomas single to make it a 7-4 game, which is where the score would remain.
Blue Rocks’ starter Andrew Alvarez battled for five innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out six and walking three. Cyclones’ starter Blade Tidwell was dominant, as well, tossing six innings, allowing six hits and two runs, striking out 11 in the process.
Sanchez led Wilmington’s lineup with a 2-4 night, adding in an RBI. Nick Shumpert came through with his solo home run, and Pena recorded his clutch two-run double in his only at-bat. For Brooklyn, Parada, Estep, and Smith all recorded multi-hit games.
The Blue Rocks have now dropped six games in a row, and will look to get back on track in game four on Friday, July 7 at 6:35 p.m. EST.
