Bridgewater, New Jersey- New York Yankees slugger Luke Voit is back in the Bronx after rehab assignments in Scranton/ Wilkes Barre (Triple-A) and most recently with the Somerset Patriots (Double-A).
Voit appeared in five Patriots games from Tuesday, June 15th through Sunday, June 20th while battling back from a right oblique strain.
The slugger went 1-for-3 in his first game with a single and a fly ball that barely stayed in the ballpark.
“I just want to get some at bats to get my timing down and hit some different pitches,” Voit said in a Zoom press conference early in his stay with the team. “You know, just get things going to feel comfortable at the plate and be confident. That way when I go back up and play with the big boys, I can make a big presence in the lineup.”
Voit seemed to find his timing on Friday when he went three-for-four with three RBI, including a two-run home run. He added a double to cap off the night as the Patriots went on to win 8-1.
“He looks healthy to me,” Patriots manager Julio Mosquera said. “I don’t worry too much about those guys coming over here and taking at-bats because the main thing is for them to see some pitching and get some swings and make sure they feel good.”
He continued to show off his major league power on Saturday night. Although he only had one at-bat, Voit blasted a shot over the fence in left-center through the rain in the bottom of the first inning.
In his final game in Somerset, Voit went 2-4 against the Flying Squirrels. He knocked a two-out, two-run single that added insurance to the 4-0 victory.
During his time with the Patriots, Voit hit .438 with seven hits, a double, two home runs and six RBI. He added four runs scored and a walk.
The 2020 MLB home run leader not only got to work on his craft between the lines, but also the excitement of playing before packed houses again. Somerset welcomed 19,367 fans over the weekend for an average of 6,400 and a total of over 30,000 for the series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels last week.
Voit now returns to the Yankees (38-33) as they start their series against the Kansas City Royals (32-38).
