Game Notes for Today, July 19

TONIGHT'S GAME: The Isotopes continue their first homestand after the All-Star Break tonight against the Omaha Storm Chasers. They come into tonight's matchup in sole possesion of first place, two games ahead of the Round Rock Express in the American Southern Division standings after both teams lost last night. The Storm Chasers are the Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Following the this homestand, Albuquerque goes on the road for four games in Nashville before returning home next Friday for their final four-game homestand of July, welcoming the New Orleans Zephyrs for the second time this season.

TALE OF TWO SANCHEZ(S): Albuquerque dropped the first game back from the All-Star Break 6-3 against Omaha at Isotopes Park last night. The Topes Jonathan Sanchez suffered the loss with litte run support. The southpaw went 4.1 innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits, while striking out seven batters, his season high. Omaha's Sanches starter, Brian, faired better, picking up his sixth win on the year, holding the Isotopes to one run over six innings of work on five hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Albuquerque chipped away at Omaha's six-run lead, but could not complete the comeback, scoring a run in the sixth, eighth and ninth. Angel Castro allowed three runs on four hits in an inning of work. Only two batters in the Topes lineup collected more than one hit on the evening. Dee Gordon and Matt Angle each had two hits and an RBI It was Angle's team-leading 26th multi-hit game. He has had two base knocks in 21 of those 26 contests.

PEN PALS: Luis Vasquez made his first appearance of 2013 at Isotopes Park in the fifth last night. The righty struck out both batters he faced. He also inherited two runners, allowing neither to score. Vasquez has surrendered one hit in two relief appearances (1.2 IP) since joining the Topes on July 11. Righthander Javy Guerra worked a scoreless ninth, allowing a hit. He has not allowed a run in his last six appearances dating back to July 4, when he was activated off the disabled list. As a reliever, Guerra is lights out, holding a 0.96 ERA (1ER/9.1 IP) in eight appearances this season. Overall, he is 0-3 with a 2.88 ERA (8ER/25.0IP) in 12 games (four starts) on the year.

VS. OMAHA: This is the Topes last of four series this season against the Storm Chasers. Omaha took three of four at Isotopes Park in their first series this season during Opening Week. The Storm Chasers then took two more at Werner Park in April, with the Isotopes winning one. The Topes took three of five from the Storm Chasers in Omaha during the pair's most recent series in June. Omaha took nine of 16 in 2012 against the Topes and also knocked them out of the playoffs. The Isotopes hold a 92-81 advantage all-time over the Storm Chasers, including a 46-39 record at home. Albuquerque and Omaha will finish their regular-season series with this four-game set at Isotopes Park.

MAKING MOVES: Catcher John Baker, outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. and infielder Rusty Ryal were activated by the Albuquerque Isotopes from the disabled yesterday. All three played in last night's loss. In corresponding moves, catcher Stephen Cilladi and infielder Elevys Gonzalez have been placed on the disabled list retroactive to Monday, July 15, and outfielder Jeremy Moore was sent to Double-A Chattanooga. Gwynn Jr. was originally placed on the disabled list on June 27 with a right toe contusion. The California native has spent all of 2013 with the Isotopes. In 69 games, he is hitting .323 (73-for-226) with three triples, nine doubles, two home runs and 23 RBI. He has also scored 36 runs. He went 1-for-3 with a run scored in his first game back, starting in left field. Ryal was placed on the DL on July 11 with a right oblique sprain and Baker was moved to the temporarily inactive list the same day. The Oklahoma native, Ryal, has played in 82 games for the Isotopes this season hitting .286 (86-for-301) with 15 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 40 RBI. He has started 52 games at first base and entered in the sixth last night to play first. Baker joined Albuquerque on June 16 and has hit .221 (15-for-68) with a homer and eight RBI in 20 games.

FROM THE TOP: The top four hitters in the Isotopes lineup had five of Albuquerque's nine hits and accounted for two of the club's three RBI. Gordon, Gwynn Jr., Elian Herrera and Alex Castellanos were a combined 5-for-15 on the evening with a walk, a run scored and two RBI. Castellanos and Gordon have not batted lower than the cleanup spot in the starting lineup up this season.
