Late Rally Dooms Isotopes Against 51s

May 7, 2015

NEED TO KNOW: A late rally at Isotopes Park Wednesday night doomed the Albuquerque Isotopes (11-16) in a 6-4 loss to the streaking Las Vegas 51s (19-8). The 51s scored a combined four runs in the final two innings to secure their 13th-straight victory.

WHAT WENT DOWN: Las Vegas jumped on the board first with a single tally in the second, but Albuquerque answered with a pair of runs to take the lead in the home half of the second. A two-out RBI triple from Joey Wong tied the game before pitcher David Hale singled in Wong for a 2-1 Topes lead. After tacking on a run in third courtesy of a Tim Smalling single, Albuquerque seemed to be primed to snap the 51s streak, but Las Vegas added single runs in the sixth and eighth to tie the game. It wasn't until a three-run top of the ninth inning that the Isotopes succumbed to the rally. The Topes managed a single run in the bottom of the ninth but could muster no more.

HALE OF A GAME: Right-handed pitcher David Hale was acquired by the Colorado Rockies this past offseason and turned in his best start since joining the organization from Atlanta. He tossed 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and three strikeouts. He left the game in the top of the sixth and was in line for this first win of the season. In his last two starts in Albuquerque, Hale has tossed 10 innings with 17 hits, five runs (all earned) four walks and eight strikeouts.

HOW ARE THEY DOING IT?: Las Vegas has now won 13 straight games dating back to April 23 against Reno. During that stretch, the 51s have swept two opponents and survived two doubleheaders.

ON DECK: The Isotopes and 51s will play the finale of their four-game series Thursday morning at 11 a.m. Albuquerque has yet to name a starter, while Las Vegas will go with No. 1 prospect Noah Syndergaard (2-0, 1.66).

WHAT'S THAT BUZZING SOUND?: Tomorrow marks the first of two School Day Matinees at Isotopes Park. The Lab is expected to host nearly 50 school groups this Thursday, while the second School Day Matinee is scheduled for Thursday, May 14.

IN THE HOLE: Nine of the Isotopes next 13 games will be at Isotopes Park. After this four-game series against Las Vegas, the Isotopes will hit the road for four games at Sacramento before returning home for another eight-game set on May 12.
