FAQs about the 2021 season

Q: What does the invitation from MLB and the Pittsburgh Pirates mean?
A: The Altoona Curve were chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates to remain the team's Double-A affiliate. However, the invitation does not make the agreement official just yet. Major League Baseball will send Player Development Licenses to all 120 teams invited to be part of the new minor league system. PDLs will outline many operational and structural details between MLB and minor league teams. Minor league teams then need to review the details of the PDLs before making any official agreements.

Q: When will Player Development Licenses be sent to the 120 teams?
A: Minor league teams should receive official PDLs before the end of the 2020 calendar year.

Q: When will invitations be formally accepted?
A: Depending on the terms and details in the PDLs, it could be January or February before invitations are formally accepted. MLB will wait until all 120 spots are filled.

Q: When will the schedule be announced?
A: The Curve are waiting on Major League Baseball to release the 2021 schedule for the minor leagues.

Q: How much control does MLB have over minor league teams?
A: It is mostly business as usual for minor league owners and operators that have retained affiliation with an MLB club. MLB is now the overall governing body over the minor leagues handling the duties of scheduling, umpires, license compliance and other administrative functions. The "control" they now have is mostly taking over responsibilities that were previously held by offices at the league level and Minor League Baseball.

Q: Will there be any increased health and safety guidelines at the ballpark during the upcoming season?
A: The Curve will take every precaution and prioritize fan safety during the current pandemic. We are currently preparing for every scenario and will implement guidelines provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania when the season begins.
