Curve finish off win, then drop night cap in Trenton

TRENTON, N.J. - The Altoona Curve finished off a 6-0 win when their suspended game from May 30 was completed on Tuesday, but the Trenton Thunder finished off the night with a walk-off, 4-3 win at ARM & HAMMER Park.

After severe weather and heavy rain halted play on May 30, play continued with the Curve leading, 6-0, in the top of the third. No runs were scored after play picked up.
The Curve (54-52, 18-20) posted six runs against Yankees prospect Deivi Garcia (Loss, 2-3), who pitched the first 2.2 innings before the game was suspended. Back-to-back doubles by Mitchell Tolman and Arden Pabst resulted in the first two runs in the second before a Bligh Madris ground out brought in Pabst to make it a three-run inning. In the third, Bralin Jackson hit a single to score Jerrick Suiter , who walked with one out, before Brett Pope delivered a knock-out, two-run double that brought in the sixth run of the game.
One pitch and two months later, the game continued with the Curve facing Greg Weissert, who did not let up a run over 3.1 innings of relief for the Thunder (56-49, 18-21).
Yeudy Garcia (Win, 1-1) took over for James Marvel, who started the game on May 30, and fired four scoreless innings. Garcia worked around four hits, including a fourth-inning double by Kyle Holder that resulted in a play at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
Mitchell Tolman added two more hits to a game that he already had a pair in, ending the game 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. It was the sixth four-hit game by a Curve hitter in 2019.
Due to the game suspended and only the use of active players, Oneil Cruz and Darnell Sweeney each made their Curve debuts as substitutes in the May 30 game.
The second game of the night was shortened to seven innings due to the suspended game, which Trenton won, 4-3.
Domingo Robles (Loss, 2-5) went the distance for the Curve but Thunder infielder Kyle Holder landed a walk-off, two-run double that erased a late 3-2 lead for the Curve.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brian Navarreto and Matt Lipka hit back-to-back pitches for one-out single and scored on Holder's game-winning, two-strike hit.
Trenton got on the board in the second with four hits off Robles. Chris Gittens, Mandy Alvarez and Isiah Gilliam all singled to load the bases with no outs before Navaretta singled in Gittens and Lipka grounded into a fielder's choice at third to plate Alvarez.
Jared Oliva 's single in the third scored all three runs for the Curve. With Suiter on second with a single and Chris Sharpe at first after a hit-by-pitch, Oliva singled to right but the ball was misplayed by Gilliam and trickled into the corner. Sutier and Sharpe scored easily while Oliva sped all the way around the bases to put the Curve ahead, 3-2.
Altoona recorded two more hits the rest of the night, each doubles by Cruz.
Michael King pitched four innings and allowed all three Curve runs behind rehabbing Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga. Daniel Alvarez (Win, 6-2) threw a perfect top of the seventh with a pair of strikeouts for the back-door winning decision.
The 6-0 win for the Curve counted to the club's First Half record while the 4-3 loss goes toward the Second Half standings. The loss in the night cap was the fourth walk-off defeat for the Curve while the shutout victory was the pitching staff's 10th of the year.
The series continues on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as right-hander Nicholas Economos (0-1, 4.76) makes the start for the Curve versus righty Nick Green (1-3, 8.78) for Trenton.
