Charleston Wins Tight 2-1 Battle in 10

April 15, 2009

For the second time in three games, the GreenJackets drop a 2-1 decision in extras - this time to the Charleston RiverDogs in 10 innings.

In his fifth inning of relief, Andrew Reichard allowed three consecutive singles to Dan Brewer, Mike Lyon and Walter Ibarra. Brewer scored on Ibarra's hit to win the game in Reichard's 2009 debut. For Ibarra, the game-winner helped make up for his two errors, which allowed the GreenJackets to get their unearned runs in the first.

Francisco Peguero led off the game with a single and Johnny Monell was hit by a pitch, but the threat quickly dissipated when Charlie Culberson hit into a double play. Juan Perez hit a ground ball to Ibarra at second with two outs and the Charleston second baseman booted the ball, allowing Peguero to score the game's first run.

That would be all for Augusta on this night though, as the GreenJackets finished with just four hits total. Brett Marshall fired six solid innings for Charleston, holding Augusta to just two hits and an unearned run with two walks and a strikeout. He was matched almost out for out by Augusta's Eric Surkamp, who tossed five innings of one-run baseball on three hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.

The RiverDogs picked up their first run in the fourth when David Adams led off with a double and scored with one out on Abraham Almonte's RBI single. Reichard's four-plus innings of relief kept Charleston in check for the rest of the night until the tenth. Reichard (0-1) struck out five without a walk in his outing.

Pat Venditte (1-0) fired two shutout innings of one-hit baseball to get the win. His five strikeouts stifled any rally the 'Jackets may have put together in extras.

The brief two-game set wraps up Wednesday night as Aaron King makes his 2009 debut against Andrew Brackman. First pitch from Charleston is at 7:05 and the game will be broadcast on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.

The 2009 opening homestand begins against the Savannah SandGnats on Thursday, April 16th with a special appearance by team owner Cal Ripken Jr. First pitch will come at 7:35 p.m. You may purchase seats by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
