LOUISVILLE, KY - The Louisville Bats (53-82) and Indianapolis Indians (75-60) split a doubleheader on Monday at Louisville Slugger Field to kick off the final home series of the season.
The Indians won game one, 7-1, behind a complete game performance from right-hander Tyler Eppler (8-8, 4.86). In his last two starts, Eppler has faced off against the Bats, allowing a combined two runs in 14 innings pitched.
The Indians wasted no time putting pressure on Cody Reed (4-9, 3.66), as Kevin Newman led off the game with a double but wound up being stranded at third base.
Reed retired the next nine batters he faced following the lead-off double. The left-hander was pulled after three scoreless innings in what was his first start since August 16.
Indianapolis struck first in the fourth inning on an error and tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly, making it a 2-0 ballgame.
The Bats had a chance to chip away at the Indians' lead in the bottom half of the frame with the bases loaded, but failed to push across a run when Darnell Sweeney was tagged out at home attempting to advance on a ball that kicked away from the catcher.
In the fifth inning, Alex Blandino sent a moonshot over the left field wall for his sixth home run in a Louisville uniform, pulling the Bats within one.
The Indians offense gave Eppler some insurance runs in the seventh inning by exploding for five runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Joey Terdoslavich.
In game two, Adam Brett Walker hit a walk-off home run in extra innings to help the Bats avoid a doubleheader sweep.
The Bats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of a Walker sacrifice fly and a passed ball.
An inning later, Indianapolis starting pitcher Cody Dickson helped his own cause with an RBI single, cutting the Indians' deficit to 2-1.
Louisville got that run back in the third inning when Sebastian Elizalde singled home Brandon Dixon, giving Elizalde his 56th RBI of the season.
Danny Ortiz tied the game at three-all in the fifth inning with a two-run home run down the right field line, his 15th of the year.
Luke Farrell (0-2, 12.66) lasted five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five.
The game was ultimately sent to extra innings and it was Walker who played hero for the Bats, depositing a home run over the lawn in left-center to give the Bats a 4-3 victory.
The Bats and Indians will continue their five-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Amir Garrett (1-4, 6.63) will start for Louisville while right-hander Clay Holmes (10-5, 3.26) will get the ball for Indianapolis.
