Bohorquez, Ross Dominate, Kernels Shutout Timber Rattlers 4-0

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Adrian Bohorquez went five scoreless innings, and after him, Michael Ross took the Kernels the rest of the way with four scoreless frames as the pair combined to blank Wisconsin 4-0 Thursday night.

Adrian Bohorquez got the start on the mound for Cedar Rapids and was really sharp across five innings of work. The right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out four in his second consecutive five-inning scoreless outing.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Cedar Rapids broke the ice. To begin the inning, Quinn McDaniel doubled to right, and two batters later came home to score on a Byron Chourio RBI double to put the Kernels in front 1-0. The next batter, Jacob McCombs, brought Chourio in with an RBI base hit to double the lead to 2-0.

That stayed the score all the way to the bottom of the eighth. After Bohorquez, Michael Ross came on out of the Cedar Rapids bullpen and went the rest of the way. Ross did not allow a run across four innings of work, only allowing two hits while striking out three en route to a 12-out save.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Kernels added insurance. A Yasser Mercedes double followed by walks from JP Smith II and Danny De Andrade loaded the bases for McDaniel, who singled in to right to plate two and up the advantage to 4-0, the score that would be the final.

The win is the Kernels' third straight to begin the series and improves Cedar Rapids to 44-65. The set with Wisconsin continues Thursday at 6:35. Justin Mitrovich takes the mound against Ethan Dorchies.
